What a scary paranoid world you must live in.
Well, other than Polio and Small Pocks, which was discovered and cured many decades ago...what diseases have been cured lately?
NONE...but a lot of "maintenance" drugs have been discovered to "manage" living with something but not a cure. If they cured it, you would not keep buying there medicine. We can't even prevent the flu or the common cold but there sure is a lot of drugs out there to manage those two.

They didn't really cure those 2 diseases either. They developed immunizations in order to prevent the diseases, the same immunizations that people are up in arms about saying they are unsafe and causing autism and guillain barre syndrome. They may in fact have these untoward effects but the benefit far outweighs any potential side effects.;-)

Unless you are the one that gets those side effects, then I think ones idea of being a benefit would change. In fact, if really linked, they made more illnesses that you need medical care for.

This is like a dog chasing his tail. It was fun but I said my piece and will leave it at that. This could drag on to boring.

Of course it sucks if you are the person who has a side effect! There is risk involved with everything. Getting out of bed in the morning brings a whole new day full of potential disasters. I won't bore you with examples of these potential disasters. I've seen several of the autism studies and the most recent one I saw said there was no difference in instances of autism between the groups who were immunized and the groups who weren't. There hasn't been any established link to these diseases but some people still think immunizations are unsafe. Look at it this way. Around the turn of the century the average life expectancy was around 40 years. Today it's almost 80 years! What exactly is that gain in life expectancy attributed to?:bigjoint:

Nutrition and sanitation.

There are also a number of cultures world wide that we have only recently come close to matching the life expectancy of, and none of them were exposed to western medicine.

I'm a father of an autistic child, and I've also read quite a bit on the matter of vaccinations having an autism link. The results have wide variations depending on who was sponsoring the study.

Aside from the obvious personal liberty issues behind mandatory inoculation, or the fact that several of the directors of the organizations that produce the formulas for these vaccines have been challenged to use or inoculate their children with them, and have refused this challenge, you can go ahead and willingly get an injection of mercury, or give it to your kids. I know I won't be doing either.

Vaccinations have played their role in extending life expectancy as well. Nutrition? I'll have to disagree with you on that one. Our diets are worse for the most part. :spew:

This one I can sorta agree with you and sorta not. Many people's diets aren't necessarily WORSE, but portion control and caloric intake is out of control for a lot of American people. I can agree that the fast food epidemic is pretty bad indeed. Remember those commercials where they show the 50's families with entire sticks of butter on their dinner plates, giant amounts of fried bacon and eggs, etc.... The consumption of fried and fatty foods to healthier foods such as veggies hasn't really gone up - it's just that food is far more available and lifestyle is more sedentary than it was in years past. The exception to this is the addition of High fructose Corn syrup to many foods that was not added before; we are eating far more sugar than ever.

On the other hand, We now have far more dietary supplements, vitamin supplements, foods are specifically chosen for their antioxidant and micronutrient content, vitamins are added to food that previously were not there. Health food stores and herbal teas are mainstream. Doctors tell people to actively pursue healthier eating choices. Nutritionists are popular and did not exist much before the 80's. None of this was true in the past in American culture.

One interesting phenomena I've noticed is the addition of vitamins and minerals to fruit juice and stuff that already should already be healthy and should have plenty of vitamins and minerals. Why are they doing this? It really pisses me off! I just want some fucking OJ! I don't want extra Calcium or DHA! If I want extra Calcium I can just drink a glass of milk! Sorry, it's kinda my hot button issue of late.

It's just marketing.

Studies have shown that a lot of the time the stuff isn't even absorbed by the body.

A company would make far more off a 'cure' for any disease than it does selling treatments. The evidence that vaccines are linked to autism just isn't there. Autism seems to be more of a problem recently because of; increased awareness of the condition, increased range of what is considered to be autism.

Alternative medicine is like saying non-evidence based medicine. If a treatment had any evidence behind it, it would be part of mainstream medicine and not an 'alternative'.

Science based medicine (Vaccines)
Quackwatch
Autismwatch

Crap based medicine

Medical Marijuana is Alternative medicine.

Please GTFO of the organic forum; you have no understanding of organics or the mindset behind its proponents.
Cannabis is showing evidence of being a helpful treatment and is becoming mainstream, which agrees with my point. I was referring to the many bunk treatments for autism.

Heisenberg I appreciate what you are saying. however this is the organics section so unless you are just here to feel superior you are barking up the wrong (organic)tree.
