I just set up my first bubbleponics grow. Have 4 plants going all 3 weeks old. Got the system from stealthhydro along with their nutes. I did my first water change and things were going well. Nice growth and nice white roots growing. 24 hours after I changed the water all my plants seemed to be in shock and the roots are turning brown. The first week I only used half of the nutes in the water then added the other half on week two. Now when I cleaned the system and put in new water I just put in the full dose of nutes. Is putting that full dose of nutes is whats causing the roots to brown and the plants to go into shock? Here are a few pics of the plants and roots. My ph is 6.7 right out of the tap and I leave the water to sit for 48 hours before I add any of it to my system. Thanks for the help guys.

Also as I type this I've got 3 gal of water sitting out so I can drain half my water out and put in 3 gals of clean water without any nutes in them. Thanks again.

6.7 is to high! 5.8 is where you want it.

Between 5.5-6.2

As student said what are your PPM's?

Preferably what were they when you first started, then what did they decrease to before you added the other half. For example you could have easily had PPM at 350 then plants use some and it drops to 200 after 2 weeks then you add the other half back up to 350. Adding that same amount you did over the 2 weeks at one time could make PPM rise to a high level and put plants into shock. The brown stuff on the roots does not look healthy.

Nute shock! There is NOO WAY you need 100% nutes when they are that young. Also what is the temp of your water. And hydro recommended PH is about 5.8 with an acceptable spread from 5.3-6.2 and depedning on what nutes you are using they have an effective PH range that you want to stick too.

Also 6.7 is way too high!! So a combo of nute shock and PH problems is probably.

That brown on the roots is also a problem? Is it slimy? where the stem of the plant meets the root system do you see a brown slimy film? If so it could be root rot.

Ok the water temp is 85 deg, Air temp around the plants is 84 deg and humidity is currently at 58. My ph after nutes is 6.6 I currently do not have a ppm meter but will be picking one up asap.

Water Temp needs to never exceed 70!

Use frozen water bottles in the reservoir to lower it.

please correct me if I'm wrong but for tonight until I can get a ppm meter the best thing I can do is drain half my water and replace it with nute free water and get my ph down to 5.8 or so.

plus get the temps down in ur dwc setup below 70 but never under 60 i have mines beween 68 62

I use heisenberg'a recipe for tea but am thinking maybe I'll just run a sterile res (h202 a lot) , which may be what the original poster needs to do until he/she gets his temps under control. Personally my first grow which can be seen here.... https://www.rollitup.org/grow-journals/346967-my-first-grow.html .... room and res temps were way out of hand, I'm talking 95f room temp and water temps not far behind, humidity was insane. I made it thru that grow due to good ol h202 I'm sure. I dunno that heisy's brew is more of a preventative thing or what (even though I've brewed and used it several times already) but I'll continue to use it . Especially since I'm going to start some mothers in soil. good luck.

thats what i use to keep things cool in my dwc set up pop bottles frozen easy and cheap way ov keepin things cool as said by weedler to lower temps

Ok I've got some frozen bottles in to cool things off and the brown just happened in the last 12 hours no brown at all for the last 3 weeks so I think my hydroton was cleaned well.

oh sorry, I misunderstood, so then we're back to h202, plants love it but algae doesn't.

Ok I think we have most everything under control here. Replaced all the water with fresh water no nutes. Water temp is down to 68 deg, took the door off the closet the system is in to help keep the temps down and that seems to be working well. Took the plants and very lovingly ran clean water over them and the brown gunk washed right off. Set the system back up with the clean water and the plants seem to be better off already. Will get a ppm meter tomorrow. Got the ph down to 5.8 and will recheck it when we add nutes back into the system. I was thinking of letting them go without any nutes for atleast 24 hours and give the plants a chance to get back to normal and when we do add the nutes it will only be a half dose like I did in week one. Thanks for all the help with my situation/questions.

maybe try putting the nutes under 50% just till they get healthy again, no point in making them work hard when all they want to do is relax

I feel somewhat stupid having to ask questions when I've got several grows under my belt but those were all in soil. I've stopped the damage to my plants got the ph stable at 5.8 with a temp of 68deg. It looks like the high ph locked out nitrogen as some of my lower leaves have yellowed. Should I remove those or just let them die and fall off on their own? Also I think instead of using the nutes that came with this stealth hydro system that I'm going to use the fox farms products that I have from my soil days. They are all water soluble so I dont know why it would be a problem. Any thoughts or ideas?

I would leave those dead leaves let them fall off.. Yeah one way to make it real easy on yourself is to try and use a igloo marine cooler ( ice chest) or the 5 gallon sport coolers ( i use them ) during veg under a T5 I would set my reservoir temps at 67-68 degrees and they would stay really close to that temperature until my next reservoir change.. I never used Fox Farm I use General Hydroponics line and they have been really good to me so far plus the online nutrient calculator on their website makes things easy too.

Plants are doing a lot better. New roots have grown and the leaves have just gone into overdrive now that I've got my ph and temp under control. They seem to love the fox farm nutes over the stuff that came with the system so I think I'll stick with it seeing how I've used it in the past and know what to expect from them. Thanks for all the advice and help this being my first non soil grow. Oh the roots are a lot more white than they show up in the pics but there are the older roots that were there at the start of this trouble. Should I trim the old dark roots away or leave them like the yellow dead leaves that are on the bottom area of the plant?

looking good heres some pics of m first dwc its a folgers plastic tub afghani goo clone off a seed plant i made the net pot and everyting a plastic water bottle since then i have upgraded to te real deal lol it is presently at 17days of flower looking goo botanicare and humbolt nutes so far
