6" rockwool cubes

so i went with the biggest rockwool cubes i could find for my almost 2 week old plant. theyre showing roots under the bottom of the first cubes i had them in so i thought it was time for a transplant.

any negative effects to going to a bigger cube so fast? my hydro guy said no but im kinda scared of screwing up.

also in these bigger cubes how often should i be watering since they hold, according to my hydro guy, about half a gallon on water.

my watering is 2x a day, flood and drain in 1.5x1.5 rockwool cubes.

new schedule is 6x6 rockwool, flood and drain, but how many times a day?

any help would be appreciated.

i also just started feeding them as they are showing leaf growth. botanicare pure blend pro. 3-1.5-4 i believe.

thanks

well in a flood table you have to set it up and do a run to see how long your pump takes to fill the table size you have and then begins to go into the overflow drain. Then add about 5 minutes to that.I do a 3x3 tray with 16 plants in 4x4 rockwool cubes in 6 inch square pots with hydroton 3 times aday for 15 minutes each time and then if it seems the cubes are too moist Ill back off some.

also do i need the hydroton in the flood table? does it matter how long the water stands in the tray or just that the tray fills?

my timer is not the best. the shortest on off time is 30 minutes.

will it be a problem?

thanks for the help

i only have 4-6" cubes at the moment

I'd just go and get a new digi timer and do it right. in terms of watering basically you just want to calculate the flow rate of your pump by watching how long it takes to fill the tray let it overflow the drain fitting for about a minute making sure that it doesn't fill too high in the tray. water every three hours during the flowering light time. so 4 times per day.

and the hydroton? is it necessary in the tray or are the cubes enough? i saw that video on youtube 'i grow chronic' and he uses hydroton and rockwool cubes in his tray so thats why im wondering if its necessary.

thanks in advance

you can use it but its not necessary you might see a bit of algae but its fine. watch for any powdery mildew.

i moved 4 to the bigger cubes and one i left in a net pot with hydroton.

the 4 in rockwool are wayyyy ahead of the net pot. week 3 today

the four in big rockwool cubes and the net pot on the bottom right were all started at same time.

I watched that series on you tube as well (I grow chronic 1-9)....you saw how well his way works....you should just stick with that (hydroton+Rockwool)...why try to re-invent the wheel....your gonna have to invest months on a grow....go with what works....people here will tell you ten different things...and you saw it with your own eyes from the I grow chronic dude...his way works

greetings fellow grower,
Just been checking out your thread looking for some answers as i have something similiar going on.... and i seen your progress in your pic.. so would you mind if i ask you a couple of questions....
Had a couple of answers already but some conflicting advice "i hate that" !!!... i have four seedlings 1 week old... "they look as mature as the seedlings you have in the small rockwool cubes" but now im wondering do i need to change what im doing.... so here is my questions,

1. Are you just using water?? Do you really water them 3 times a day?? also ?.... And when do you begin to feed nutrients, i mean at what size plant or what age ?? "ph 5.5 for both the water and also for the nutrients"?

2. what kind of lighting are you using and what distance do you keep it above the plants?

If you or anyone can help me answer these questions i'd appreciate it...

Thanks in advance...

calm down the big rockwool cubes hold a lot more water the the 4in...
I grew full plants in 6in rockwool, and only water once a day, for 3 min on my flood table, so it all depend on how much water your plants is using, Pick it up, if it feels light, and looks dry, water it, feels heavy and u can see water, wait a lil bit, figure out water your plants need. If the ph is around 5.5 consistently, then the plants shoud be getting nutes form the non-ROed, water and then will not need any added nuted until u see yellowing, or weakening of the plant... then slowly, add small amount of organic nutrients, start with half of what they recommend, same with RO water

their are a few benifits to having the hydrotoen around the cubes.
1. it wont take as much water to fill it up.
2. you wont get light on the bottom of your tray so any water that hangs around wont mold up.
3. keeps light off the bottom edges of your cubes witch can get moldy as well from the light. thus meaning u should set them down in the hydrotone about 1-3 inches & make shure the water stays at least 1 inch lower than the top of the hydrotone so light doesnt hit the water.
hope that hepls some

i am just using tap water from my faucet letting it air out for a day and then pH it before i put in rez. i dont water the cubes 3x a day but when they are wet i put the bottom of my cubes in a puddle of water until they soak up a little. i began nutrients on the bigger plants once they had 3 alternating sets of leaves.

i was using flouros for the firtst 20 days. two daylight flouros on a shop light from walmart (recently switched to 400w MH highbay with modded reflector)
i kept the light right over the plant. not even more than an inch away. the flouros dont get hot at all.

i put the seedlings in the big rockwool cubes and they just skyrocketed. i mean in about 12 days they tripled in size. (NO JOKE)

im def going to be using the big cubes again ill post pics when i get home.
