Mushroom Grow Journal

Ok so I'm a little late on starting this journal, but I just want to make sure that what I have is Mycellium. I bought pre-sterilized jars and innoculated them about 13 days ago. I innoculated 6 jars and keeping them in a dark drawer with a heating pad, keeping it at 75-80 degrees. About 6 day I started to notice mycellium growth. As far as I can tell it's doing fantastic, I just wanted to post some pictures of the 13 day old growth to make sure that it's right. I will continue to post pics if anyone is interested. Oh and these are Cambodian mushrooms.
I am going to fruit them in a fish tank terrarium. I will post pics of that set up too. Any advice n making a terrarium out of an aquarium would be very much appreciated also as this is my first grow.
Thanks for looking and please comment!!

These are just some close up pictures of all 6 jars on day 15. I wanted to take some on exactly 2 weeks, but this is close enough. Hopefully this kind of gives other beginners something to go by. I have 2 jars that aren't near as colonized as the others. Hopefully by 3 weeks some of the more colonized jars will be finished and ready to fruit.
Please leave comments and again if anyone has any strategies on using an aquarium as a fruiting chamber, please let me know as I have never done this before!
Thanks and hope you enjoy the pictures

The key to any fruiting chamber is relitive humidity and fresh air exchange. the shot gun terraium is very popular.

if your fruiting chamber is glass you can't fill it with holes obviously so you would need to fan it way way more often to disperse Co2??? well to disperse what ever is in there and replace with FRESH air.
some people hook up air pumps and put them in a glass of water and hydrogen peroxide to give there chamber's fresh air with out opening or fanning there terraium but constant flow of fresh air will keep the humidity down so adjustments would have to be made to correct that.

I use a clear rubbermaid with loose fitting lid, three inches of perlite. Almost no holes for fresh air but I fan like all the time practically, and I spray with fine mister into the corner of the rubbermaid not directly at the mushrooms.

where are you keeping those jars? what are the temps there? looks kinda slow for 15 days after inocculation... dont see contams though. Next time use a little less water in the mix and make sure its fluffly and not packed in the jar at all. Why do so many people here on RUI use pint jars??? they are inferior to and take up more space than 1/2 pint jars.

These jars are being kept in a dark drawer with a heater pad, keeping the temp between 75-80 degrees. The mix was not made by myself. I ordered pre-sterilized 1/2 pint jars from the internet.

What I have for my setup so far is a glass box with a filtered air pump on the outside pumping fresh air into the tank. There are about 2 or 3 holes in the top of the Aquarium to allow for old air to exit. I plan on covering the bottom with 2-3 inches of perlite and filling it with water. Then a heating pad will be places under the tank to provide greater humidity. I'm sure water will have to be added eventually to compensate for the amount of evaporation. I was told a blue light on the top of the aquarium turned on 3-4 hours a day was good for them. Any thoughts about lighting sources?
Thanks for all your input!

I use pint jars for cakes but I only fill my jars half way, it was cheaper than buying new jars. I now use half pints for cakes but only cause I found some half pints at wallmart the other day

well the bad air wont exit the top even with air pump, its carbon dioxide i belive and its heavy and sits at the bottom. fanning will be nessacary to remove the gasses and allow the fresh air to the mushies.

also perlite sitting in water will do nothing. you want to wet the perlite but not have it in standing water it needs air to evaporate the water from its tiny little resivoirs

I would use a floresent light bulb in 6500k spectrum. incandesent lights will decrease yeaild and potency also 12 hours of light is much better than 4.

Take them out of the drawer and off of that heat pad asap. Room temp is fine and it will only screw up the moisture content with it sitting on a heat pad. Put them on a shelf in the open air if you want good results.

Please tell me this isnt a contaminate. It's a kind of pinkish/orangish color. I can't tell if it's just vermiculite poking throw and making it look a little weird or if it's some sort of contam. I checked the pictures of all contaminates and it doesn't look like any of them so hopefully it's just the vermiculite.

Definately contam'd. That's what happens when you use a heating pad in a drawer. Toss out immediately and next time keep on an open shelf at room temp. Even low 70's is fine, though a little warmer would be quicker. Basically when you heat jars from the bottom like that it dries out the bottom and wicks moisture into you dry verm layer which is a contam filter. Once it gets wet
it no longer serves that purpose.
