The effects are not nearly the same, the stupidity, is that the only information about the substance came from the same people that said pot is bad.... and they lied.

Yep, its old news here, peolpe stealing other people ARV's and selling their own, or even government employees steeling and selling it.

As for why people use it? because its cheap, the price of a crack or other chemical addiction is higher than the daily income of most.

Do the pills have an actual effect? A bunch of these stories popped up in my google news feed and one claimed any effects were placebo. It wouldn't surprise me when you read about people trying to cure aids by raping virgins and crazy shit like that. What's the real news from South Africa?

I don't know first hand about ARV's but the stories about its use as a drug makes the press here occasionaly.
You can not realy discuss the south african situation without dividing things along racial lines, as it is not a homogenous population.
And shit like that always goes south on a forum, as most people don't have the intelect to seperate themselves from that which is discussed, for the purpose of gaining understaning.

I fully understand what you are saying ... I have traveled through Morocco, Tunisia ... Egypt .... made it to the boarder of SA.
I have also been to some Favelas in Colombia/Brazil .... some shack towns in Nicaragua/Honduras. And let me tell ya ... I would never be able to understand unless I had direct contact.

Most people in the western world seem to be to ethnocentric ... to understand the universal human condition.
No matter how hard they try. They can not disconnect in order to properly observe and understand.
They don't see it everyday ... they don't live it ...... seeing it in pictures and on TV ... simply does not cut it !

I simile when people wonder why someone would use a compound ... not understanding social/economic and cultural/other ... factors .... which play a direct role in the consumption and abuse of given.
