I grow with cfls, so I have no experience with HIDs.....but i bet you could save yourself some money buying the mogul adaptor and making a homeade reflector out of sheet metal......damn you could save a lot of money that way!

Unless you already have a ballast to light the 400w hps bulb, you are really not going to save any money buying a cheap bulb that you cannot light. Good luck.

Thanks for the good sites to get a cheap ass HPS light. I've been shopping for weeks online and the High Tech Garden Supply site is the best I've seen yet. Splifman, do you remember how long shipping took for you??

How is the bulb that comes with the HPS from High Tech Garden Supply? I paid something like $90 just for my bulb(which does seem to kick ass).

Being my first grow I have no basis for comparison. It says that the HPS bulb puts out more lumens than your typical HPS light. I think it puts out 55,000 instead of the regular 50,000 lumens. Several people on here use the same bulb such as videoman and russ0r, who both have grow journals so you can see their results. Its worked very well for me.

so if i plug that bulb into the adaptor it wont light??:cry: - cause i cant spend that much money. i need something for under $50 (any ideas??) - also ballasts or w/e they're called arn't that expensive what kind would i need for that lightbulb??

edit: will two of these work if i make my own relfector and such???

Not really sure what adapter you're talking about man, but all I know is, is that you NEED to get a ballast that is rated to handle the HPS bulb. The ballast itself is just a certain kind of transformer as well as a capacitor which helps jump the power for a bit to start the bulb. Trying to rig something else would definitly be dangerous! There are metal halide bulbs that come with some kind of adaptation where you can screw the metal halide bulb into the high pressure sodium ballast. That's all I can tell you about an adapter because I'm pretty sure what ever you're thinking of will NOT work. With that kind of budget ($50), the only thing that will work for you are CFL's. And to get the same amount of lumens per square feet you are probably not gonna do it for $50.

wait and save up to put some money into the project. I have found that if you try to cut too many corners eventually you will regret it and you will probably end up spending more money in the long run.

yeah splifman you've got a good point. buying too soon and too cheap leads to owning shit you don't need that breaks too soon.
