Unofficial Dry-Vac Carbon Filter

Thanks DG. I'm hoping this inspires anyone sitting on the fence about making a Carbon Filter. Since, it's a lot easier than it looks. What I'm looking forward to most, is the inevitable design improvements provided by the rest of the community.

hey purp u think this can work?its a lint trap i saw when i was buying my 6-4 reducer today i will get my carbon tommorrow. but i saw this and thought it could work. still decided to make ur tho. i found a filter thats a little taller and the reducer fits so snug it will be perfect. i just mounted my fan today. thanks for the quick fix. +rep to u

You're welcome, Shiska. And yeah, you could totally turn that thing into one. But like you noticed, the ducting fits unbelievably snug into the filters. It's like they were meant to be together.

Also, I'm not sure if you're interested, but I'm planning on getting this thing.

It's for a bigger filter, so I'm hoping there will be extra to put on the outside part of the screen as well as enough to wrap around the outside of the filter. I know there are rolls of carbon out there for cheaper, but can't find em. Help?

Edit: Update. I found a carbon prefilter roll for about 4 bucks and one for 8 from some eco-brand. Don't know why I didn't just get it, but I will get it soon and add it to the rig.

I just followed up on some advice from Pappabear and got a pre-filter. Found it in the air-conditioning section at the hardware store. It was $4.00 and they have this $8.00 sheet of slightly higher grade. I should have bought this stuff from the beginning. Thank god for RIU.

Yeah man. It's a Six Inch Collar. Although I'd probably put it on a 6" duct that's connected in line with your 6" inline fan.

Had to Edit more: I know what you mean, It wasn't until I put the pieces together did it clear up and all make sense. The simplicity is unbelievable. Once you put it together you stare it down like "nawww", trying not to believe. But seriously, works like a carbon filter. Because it is a carbon filter.
Now looking back, I should have had the pre-filter wrapped on the inside around the canister walls as well as outside. And the end-cap should probably be replaced with screens and Pre-filters. There is a lot one can do with these things.

Been using Shop vac Carbon Filter for 5 months now. So funny to see someone else finding this. I was just messing with ideas and had filter laying around and it fit right on my hood. I just filled with carbon and put a screen inside and slid it on my air cooled hood. Its tied into my Cold air return and the fan runs 24/7 in my basement with no smell at all. Temps run 10 degrees warmer and keeps my basement 74 degrees. Not the best set up but I dont have hot air exhausting out my house and I save on gas bill.

Thank you for your thread, I tried a DIY project on the link-o-rama of a well known other site, but I didn't have luck, no fault of the designer though, I just didn't have the parts, and make-shifted his design, looking at this it's very simple and straight forward. I am kicking myself for looking at the shop vac filters thinking hmmm and not pursuing this.

Might have to combine two or three of them for a room that big. I think the recommended filter size for a room that size is around 18"-24" long. However, that might just be clever marketing. If anything the carbon might just have to be replaced sooner. And adding a pre-filter would increase the carbon effectiveness as well. Because it's pretty much felt cloth with an activated carbon layer.

Edit: Cant believe I didn't ask, but how did you do your screen in there? Cylindrical?

i got some pantyhose and used 2 of them. just the reducer the filter the pantyhose carbon and duct tape

I have not had to replace carbon yet but I plan on replacing after this grow. So it will be 6 months. I dont have a prefilter around mine but is a good idea because its getting really dirty. But the shopvac filter is only 10 bucks at menards so its not to a big deal to just replace the whole thing. They also have hepa and other high grade filters for a little more cash.
