my plants grow primarily in a 2" net cup, other than trying to get the damn thing back to use again i have no problems with them at all. 3" would even be fine (best IMO). As far as wieght i have no idea but im sure 10-15 lbs is possible with the whole root system being soaked. If you do not think your lid will hold get a 2" thick sheet of the Styrofoam from home depot cut larger than your tub and wrap it top bottom and sides with aluminum duct tape (normal duct tape wont hold up to the water). Then cut your holes into it. I would use hydrotron rocks to fill the cup, they are do not hold water like the rockwool, which sometimes will drown you plant.

Sunleaves, the rock that doesn't roll. I've determined hydroton is trash. You're talking about a storage tote right? I grew some 5 plus foot tall plants in a storage tote and realized the lid just wouldn't do so I redesigned the tote, I used pvc pipe and fittings in the tote to support the lid, of course I already had to place plumbing in the tote because it was an active aerospring type unit with a water pump and sprayers, see photos of before when the plumbing was simple and after when it supported the lid....oh , after thought now my shits gonna look like this...

I've had 1 1/2 inch stalks hows that work out in a 2 inch netpot???? Doesn't make much sense to use such a small netpot since they've got to be spaced out more than the size of the pot.

this happened with me too and plants were too big roots were huge they broke the netpots open so easily. you would imagine they would fall into the res but theres no way this could happen you cannot notice anything without looking below the lid. they engulf the whole netpot and become a nice rootball. i saw no difference compared to bigger netpots

they come in three sizes 6 inch , 4 inch and 3 inch. I bought pretty sturdy netpots so they've been around for a couple grows but when they give out I'm def going with those drainage atirums

i would stick to netpot that is breakable so that if the roots overgrow they can break their way through
