Canefan's New Grow 2010

It has been a busy week here so I got behind on my journal but what else is new for me. I guess I will do a couple of entries today because I have several plants to update. First I just want to update on the condition of soil this year. Yeah, its good:clap: this year, I have stepped up several plants the past week and have found good worm populations in all the plants I have stepped up. Yesterday I did one of the babies and found 2 full grown worms and a slew of baby worms. Here are a couple of picks of the pot. I also, just want to say this is one of the reasons besides root growth that I enjoy stepping up plants 3 to 4 times during the grow. Fresh soil equals new food for the worms and healthy worms mean a well fed healthy plant.

Yema Pheno1 is doing well, I have a few pics that were taken on the 20th showing her progress. As stated earlier she got a little underfed but is now back on track and greening up again nicely, guess I need new pics for that. The buds are nice and frosty and getting frostier every day along with the seeds to be swelling up on one branch. I think that Yema is about halfway finished meaning another 5 weeks or so. The buds are staying a bit small just like her momma was and just what I was looking for. Whatever I miss in size of the buds I seem to be making up for with budsites. These littler buds do better in the high rain and humidity we have here so I am really stoked at her progress and bud makeup.

Hi folks this is a little subjournal if you will trying to show what if any effects giving molasses to plants during flower over ones that don't receive molasses.
First let me explain my set up for those that haven't read my journal. I grow in living organic soil which I have made. The compost is no high tech compost but simply: grass clippings, leaves both green and dead, soft woody weeds, veggie scraps, egg shells, rotted fruit from the farm, lots of banana parts (I have hundreds of trees and when finished I chop them up and put the entire tree in along with whole bananas), coffee grounds, fresh and dried manure (horse and cow) and wood ash from my burn piles.
For the purpose of this expriement I am using 2 clones taken from the plant I now have in flower (Yema) which is a cross I made last year. The clones were taken on the same day from the opposite sides of the plant. One clone rooted quickly and the other was a little behind and then once showing roots just kinda took a nap for a couple of days. Anyway, they are about 5 days apart being set out to flower, they were set out at 16 inches.
Point of clarification: both plants have received 3 light waterings of molasses to date. The last time watered with molasses for this expriement, the clone which will be going without was 2 weeks ago. So this plant will enter actual flower without molasses for almost a month.
The photos below are of the plants to be used, I am also enclosing a link to photobucket so that if you wish to see the photos in full size and also last years grow.
To all that view this expriement I welcome any and all comments and suggestions. I am open to ideas an opposing ideas so that we can make this as equal for the 2 plants as possible.
Special thanks to those in the research group for helping me with ideas and motivation to do this.:clap:

Well it has been too long since I have chimed in on the journal. So many things have happened since the last entry.
Thanks for the comments and all the views, I will attempt to bring all the grow up to date this week.
First the molasses project.......cancelled due to mold:evil:. I made about 8 weeks into flower when the weather turned to pure shit. For those unfamiliar, I live in Costa Rica at 6500 ft above sea level and humidity and weather are always a challenge.
Sorry I don't have any pics of the plants before I cut them down but let me say that I could see no difference between the plants that received molasses and the one that didn't. I don't know if this is because the soil was already good or it has no affect. The buds were almost identical to each other in size and appearance.
When the mold appearred I started using two methods to stop it
1. baking soda solution sprayed on infected areas - dosage here is important to not damage the bud. This method works well at arresting the development of mold and killing what is there. This is not a preventative!!!!!!!!!!
2. Hyrdogen Peroxide solution sprayed on plants as in foliar feeding - dosage here is also important or you run the risk of killing off the pistils. The bud will continue to grow and not affect the plant in future development.
Alas, even with constant picking, cutting and pulling I decided just to cut the girls down. I have a new strain which is better for mold and plan to restart this test in the next generation of clones.

Updates and pics on the main grow to follow later today or tomorrow, soon as it stops raining long enough to take pics.

Goobly - in answer to your question about the soil - yes it is full of clay. This is all volcanic soil mixed with compost. I have finally after 4 years here found a source of a compost mix used for coffee plants and I am currently in my first generation of plants using this new mix. The plants love it and the worms are even more happy and I thought with all the worms in my soil that was impossible.. The new updates will explain this new method I am trying.
Thanks for all the comments and hope that I stay current to keep ya'll coming back.

Finally giving an update, I want to apologize for the length inbetween. Lots of things have been going on, this time of year is when I get all my cuttings and flowers ready to the next year. I also have been in the middle of changing my soil and nutes.
I have found a source of organic compost used by the organic coffee growers here, now that I speak a little better spanish it is easier to find some things that I couldn't before. Anyway this compost is certified by the government, in fact if I am not mistaken made by them also, and is producing excellent results. The worms are happy, the moisture retention is much better, cutting my watering down to about every 6 days for the 5 gallon pots and about 4 to 6 days on the smaller pots if they are under cloudy conditons.
I have been mixing my old soil into the ready to use compost pile I make. This compost pile is mixed with the soil and then mixed into the coffee compost material at the rate of 50/50. I started out with a lower ration and kept trying to find the best mixture on my other flowers and potted plants and then on my babies. I figure it is better to lose some easy cloning flowers and shrubs than my babies:hump:.
Ok, just stay with me here is the plant report:

Yema: She is not in the lineup anymore, very prone to mold and never was able to get her past the 8th week. The smoke even being very early is a good daytime work around the place high. Energentic, uplifting and hanging around right behind the eyes. Downside, short lived high only about an hour to hour and a half.
Yema Dos: She is doing well and holding up to the weather better than most everything else I have grown here. Brief recap: She is the second pheno of Linda(Hawaiian x Skunk #1) X Sannie's Jack, she is the indica side of the strain and is figuring into my indica side of growing. She was set out to flower on about the 20th of Sept. I have started picking a bit of mold from her and treating the affected areas with a baking soda spray. Very Good results. The clone of Yema Dos is doing great, raised in the new soil mix and you can see the difference in the plants. The clone was grown to 24 inches instead of the 16 inches mom was.

Sweet Melissa: El Monstre X Sannie's Jack - She is doing pretty well, considering I just cut half of her down. She had been really good, nice looking buds (more bud pics in next update) very white and frosty. Last week with all the rain and guess you could call it fog. The clouds are at this altitude pretty much 24/7 this time of year. So last week it got so bad instead of losing more of her I chopped the top off of her. I sampled a piece of her and was impressed. She has been in flower now 12 or 13 weeks and still has lots longer to go weather permitting. At least with the sativa she is good early and can only get better:mrgreen:. The one little pipe full I had, took 3 quick pulls and was a very confused stone. The high lasted a good amount of time and for green was pretty smooth. She is crossed with a male from the same pheno. The seeds are ready to harvest.
Sweet Melissa II 18-12-10.jpgSweet Melissa Clone.jpgSecond pic is the clone also grown to 24 inches instead of the 16 inches of mom. She is much fuller and better shaped buds.

Sweet Melissa Dos: The second pheno of the above cross, very lovely. She was eaten by a grasshopper when she was only a 7 node baby down to the second. She grew out to nice colas and when she originally flowered was totally reddish/purple pistils. Since then she has faded at time and gotten more color at other times, very strange. My batteries ran out so I don't have a good bud picture today, but will after this post and my batteries are charged. Very happy with this one so far and looking for the proper male now, another story:wall:. She is in clone now for future breeding.
Those are my flowering girls today, I will post later today or tomorrow the clones, males along with some new bud pics.

Great my man, I know that you can do 5 weeks and keep smiling:mrgreen:. Seems like all good things come in their own sweet time, but you will be ready for the worst part of winter now and also have a head start for spring. Congrats on the indoor I know you have been patient this year for all of this to happen.
My wife just told me yesterday I get to have a 600 watt lumatek set up in January. I am so happy and yet know now that it will take a couple of months or more for me to get a room made for it, but hey  it's all good. As recently as this summer I wouldn't have believed that I would say "I have grow lights". I realize that I do use cfl's to help maintain my veg schedule but never for flower.
I just got so tired of seeing these nice sativas and sativa dom getting so close to finish only to have mold mess me up. I love living up here in the mountains but it is killing me growing outside.
So here is what I am thinking and I would appreciate to all the readers any suggestions you might have for me and my plan.
Here is the set up 600 watt dimmable lumatek ballast, undecided on the bulb but am leaning to a super HPS the one with some blue in the spectrum. The reflector honestly is the cheapest thing I could find for this moment. It was like $20 US with socket and cord, cheap cheap.......lol. I want the 4ft parabolic but currently being retired and on a very fixed income this has to wait a few months.
I want to flower just as I have in the past for the first half of the flower period, with my current strains usually about 6 or 7 weeks and then move them into the lights where they are protected and I can keep humidity more under control at night.
What do ya'll think of this? Happy to here any and all, also I will post my new strains later this morning.
Merry Christmas to all

Sound like a solid plan to m..Thats what i usually do in these parts..theres no way in here U can successfully flower, if u dont have some super duper autos...I vegg my plants for about 2 months, take clones on regular basis, and then move them to my shed, that is constantly being changed and improved...

Have U thought on also getting a light mover...I hear u man that u have not so many funds, just like me, and the mover should cost about the same as 600 watter, but it would be a great investment...More even light for all those parts of the grow room, but also it all depends how big it is, maybe you dont need it at all...

Keep up the good work cane...:peace:

Here is a list and some pics of what other plants I have going right now and what I plan to do with this cycle.

New Blue Diesel: This is another from Sannie's Seeds, Breeder's Choice. This was a hard choice but I like the lineage of the strain, I also need the night time meds. I have two plants going now 1 male and 1 female. I just set the girl outside this past weekend and she is stretching nicely now. I have 2 clones in the tray to carry her onward. The male is nice, slightly different structure but for this go around he will have to do. My problem is that I have limited seeds and only sprouted two so I guess I got lucky to have one of each.
I plan on crossing these two back together and also to use the male with my Yema Dos, which is an indica dom pheno.
New Blue Diesel F.jpgThis is the girl. New Blue Diesel M.jpgThe male.

The One X Chronic: I only had one seed which is also a Sannie's creation. This is a hybrid that has both an indica and a sativa dom pheno. My pheno is a nice stretchy sativa dom, which will go well with some of my others. He is forming his sacs now and have a clone which should be in the dirt in another day or two.
The One X Chronic M.jpg

Runt: For those that followed last years grow this was my red pistil plant and is pictured in my avatar. I planted two seeds this year just to fill a gap and see what would happen. One was a nice looking sativa leafed pheno which I pulled. She was totally yellow and mutated leaves and true to the name Runt. This second plant is showing much more indica than last year's. I don't know the history of this as it was given to me by a grower on my last visit to the States and he won't say if he knows. This plant is currently in veg at around 56 days from putting the seed in the germ tray. She is just starting to show sex and if I were to venture a guess 99% sure she is a she. Now the wait to see if the red pistils come through on this pheno. I plan to breed this plant or her clone to New Blue Diesel to further the indica side of things and add color back into the mix. With two different colors I don't know how long it will take to find one with both but therein lays the fun. New Runt.jpg

Those are the girls for this cycle, 3 weeks down and another 10 or 12 to go:mrgreen:. The New Blue Diesel is not set out to flower, I can't wait to see her being a new strain and all.
I also put Sativa Queen, El Monstre and Himalya Gold in the germ tray today.
Thanks for all the views, all comments, opinions and even critisisms are welcome.
Merry Christmas to All and :peace: on Earth
