Not to disagree but wouldnt a solid color cup be better for cloning, keep too much light from effecting the root development? or is light not a factor at this point?

Your clones should be put in a dark place or low light place for first couple days. Then a couple cfl's after that until the shock of cutting has passed. Depending on how mant you take cfl's are good for veging. Keep humidity up and lightly mist them a couple times a day.

no the reason hes using clear cups is to see if the roots have developed and the mild lighting would do nothing to these roots.

that was my point is to see the roots.
Good idea, maybe clear cup inside a colored cup to block extra light. then you could just pull off the colored cup to check for roots. ?
Just a thought. but the clear cup is a great idea to check rood development.
Gotta remember that one if I ever go back to soil.

To be honest you did not ask the right question here. To answer you on what you asked, yes a clear cup is fine, a dome is a good thing to have in my opinion, some people don't use one, and yes a 200w cfl is esential. but.....

I can't be sure you did everything else. To clone successfully, you need to do as much right as possible and the more right things you do the better your chanses.

1) Make sure the cutting was taken from the right spot, you cut inbetween nodes at a 45 degree angle with a very sharp something, I use a medical scalpel. yea :-)

2) remove the excess leaves and leave enough at the top leaf wise.

3) put the cutting IMEDIATLY in either a rooting poweder or rooting solution. This is prob the most important aspect of it all. Remember not all rooting stuff is the same, it took me a while to get a good one.

4) after you have dipped it in the rooting solution you need to put it in your growing medium in a cup or whatever you use. I use jiffy cubes for example.

5) then you place, as you did, the cup or jiffy cube on the heating pod. VERY IMPORTANT - is you heating pad under a tile ??? You need a tile to disperse the heat, also if it is hot round your parts, do not use the heating pad, to hot is also bad, i learned the hard way. :-)

6) cover with the dome

7) Very important, spray the clone with fresh water twice a day, no need to water untill you know it has rooted, just spray it.

8) last tip, make sure you have at least 6 hours of darkness, plants root better if they have a dark period.

Hope this helps. my fingers hurt. lol

I would suggest that you fashion a sleeve around the cup to keep out the light and be able to look for root development when you wish. This could be done easily by using a colored cup on the ouside. If you are using a clear cup you will have to either transplant as soon as you see the first sign of root development or cover the outside of the cup anyway until you are ready to transplant.
As far as your light goes, a 200 watt cfl? Wow that is a lot of wattage on those tender cuttings. I have great success with 5 to 10 clones under 1 23 watt cfl. But if this works for you great! There are so many ways to clone all with good to great results.
Happy Growing and Merry Christmas

IMO the issue everyone is raising regarding the roots and light is completely vallid, however if he replants as soon as he sees root, there would be no issue.

The roots would only be affected if it actually see the light, in the soil it obviously does not get light on it. It is the same as when root come through my jiffy cube, i need to replant otherwise I am going to stunt the growth.

So what people are not saying is that he should replant as soon as there are signs of roots.
