Haha, its funny, l feel opposite when it comes to paintin...guess cause l've been doin it so long. I'll cut in, roll, and spray all day long (caulking isn't too bad either until winter, talk about chapped fingers!), but jesus l HATE sandin walls and trim. The houses we do usually fall anywhere between 2800 and 6500 sq feet though, so 8 hours a day of nothin but sandin, for 3 days, can be tiring lol (l found a new respect for sheet rockers after my first taste of sandin). Second worst thing, masking off windows to spray. Floors dont take too long, you can just lay that paper down n tape the hell outta it, but having 1/8" of window seal to run tape and plastic on, can get to be one hell of a hassle, especially on a windy day.

Electricians n plumbers make helluva lot of money out here, but l've seen too many things go awry w/electricians for me to want to do it lol. One guy was at a house when it was gettin under roof workin alone, and l'm thinkin he was installin some kinda box on the ceiling with a nailgun, on a 22' stepladder....he has holdin on to the framing with one hand and nailgun in the other, and managed to shoot 2 nails through his hand holdin the framin...he had to stand there hands above his head for 3 hours before somebody stopped by lol poor fucker

What annoys me is when it comes to anything that average Joe doesn't know about, "professionals" take it upon themselves to take the piss. I've Witnessed it firsthand may times. Especially amongst PC repair guys. It's sickening.

That's why I'm all about doing as much as possible myself. The old saying "Can't trust anyone but yourself" Is so true

Dude, that video is kinda what sparked my interest in cabins, I saw it a couple months back, that dude is one badass mofo!

And I just spent like an hour and a half reading a thread on that forum. Dude built a pretty amazing cabin! Looks beautiful!

just built some frames for the holidays as money is tight here. tools enlisted:

miter box and handsaw (miter saw is on the wish list)
sand paper (120 grit)
power sander
wood glue
heavy duty staple gun
staples
heavy objects (corner clamps or miter clamps are on the wish list)
more sand paper (180 grit)
wood filler
more sand paper(180 grit)
stain - dark walnut
100% cotton t shirts
more sandpaper (220 grit)
polyurethane seal, water based
foam brush
screwdriver to open stain and seal
hammer
brad nails
picture hanging hardware
stick measure
pencil

as you can see, just a simple project like frames require a lot of tools if you want them to come out right, especially if you don't have certain tools.

an air compressor and nail gun would have made this project a lot easier and the miters a lot tighter.

Oh man tell me about it guy! Speakin of pc repair guys, l just suffered my ps3 crashin on me a few weeks ago. Sony charges 150 plus a 6 week wait. Local repair shops charge around 100. So l took my happy ass to home depot and bought a 20 dollar heat gun, ran to radio shack and spent 6 bucks on some thermal compound, watched a few youtube videos and voila, fixed it myself not knowin jack shit about electronics lol saved a ton of money too, which is usually the case with most DIY jobs (biggest money saver for me being car repair, not that l know how to fix a motor but a few lifelong buddies do for cheap lol)

I mean hell, this forum even...provides all the necessary info in the greatest detail on how to grow...to hell spendin anywhere from 120-350 a bag, grow it yourself with a little start up cost and smoke for free forever!

I started building picture frames for my mom..built 80 plus so far..but i got all the wood working tools ill ever need...but growing up poor you do it your self or it dont get done..im a jack of all trades and master of none..few pics of my latest projects...

I've always loved working with my hands. My father was a third generation machinist. He used to run a machine shop with my grandfather. Mostly CNC work, making surgical tools. I'm jealous of anyone that works with their hands. I work with computers all day so I always this overwhelming urge to build something. Last time I built a few solar panels, next I think I'll build a wind powered generator.

On the subject of being a Handy Man. Apparently what are a called "Dad Skills" You know shit like putting up a shelf, changing engine oil, etc. They are dying out and a lot of people can't even do this stuff anymore. Which bafflles me because with the internet you can learn how to do pretty much anything.

I built my own Gaming PC a few years ago and now I can fix pretty much most PC problems, and do it for friends and family. And then get business from their friends. The people that want me to fix their computer all have horror stories about PC repair places ripping them off.

dsb65 had some nice designs for a planter in pics 4 and 5. looks like a project you can even pull off without a ton of tools, too. might have to make the roof open so the tomatoes could grow through.

i am lucky that i still have my dad and always have, teaching me a lot of these things as i grew up. internet is no substitute for a dad to teach you these things.

I am constantly working on my 1st house. Bought it for 40k free and clear no mortgage, a fixer-upper if you will. Most times it is fun, other days i want to blow it up. Just remodeled my bathroom, quite pleased with the results, as is my fiancee. I trust DeWalt, Hitachi, Bosch and Makita. Craftsman is ok mainly because of the free lifetime warranties. Power miter saw is a must for just about anything. And a PENCIL!!!

Neo if your gonna redo the floors go to lumber liquidators. In April they have a crazy sale. I buy entire truck loads and get laminate floors for around .19 a sq ft. Hardwood teak for 1.65 a sq ft you can't beat it. Speed square and a pencil are key.
