Alright so I have my babies gowing nice under two 400w hps, I know that for veg u need a blue color buld like cfls. I was thinking if its okay to change to MH bulbs after using the hps for week or so ?

what kind of ballast do you have? wILL IT run an MH? If so...then swithch now....if not...then either get the right ballast or stay with hps!
good luck

personally, i wouldnt. the hps isnt going to stretch it that much, and depending on the strain, might not matter. i havent noticed much difference between the two in veg other than the clolor of the light, which the color we see has nothing to do with the plants growing. they use rays that we do not see anyway. the mh just help keep it bushy, but you can trim/train your plant to do whatever you want, so....it really doesnt matter lol.

You did not tell us if these were seedlings or clones, hence the two opposing answers. If they are seeds, get blue light in there quick, it will raise the female ratio, as where the hps (orange) light will cause more males. If you are doing clones i dont see a reason to change.
Color temp is seen more by plants then us, there is colors they can not use (why do you think you can use a green light in the dark periods?) and colors that cause different growth patterns. There is a lot of useful information on this, but honestly for clones a lot of guys still use hps to veg them, i use t5's in blue cause i can grow bushes with it. Make sure you take all advice on here with a grain of salt, the opposite opinions will show there is a lot of bad info out there, the best way to find out is to try it yourself.

^true. i use clones and switched to sog. but i guess as an example, my first grow, was broke, used bagseed, and just loved weed. i had six 26w cfls varied in color temp in soil in a clear container using MG --------LMFAO. but, it didnt hardly cost me anything and i learned alot, then switched to dwc, still cfls. got money and bought the mh. had to use it through flowering. not bad at all for the strain i had, very potent, but only 3oz from 6 plants. then got more money, bought hps, and 216w t-5, doubled everything, etc...... so i guess if you want the best anwser, list your exact equipment, age of grow, type of grow, so on

I have the hydrogro ballast and it has a switch one for hps and one for mh.they are seedlings I started off with a bunch of 100w cfls and 2 weeks later I changed it to the hps. I transplanted them a week ago.

From what i have heard you are in the really important stage for encouraging females over males, If you can afford it i would go buy a MH bulb and put it in ASAP!!! Hopefully it will help your female ratio still.

A seed is either male or female geneticly, light will not change one to the other

MH is better for vegging. If your ballast will support both bulbs I would definately buy a mh for vegging.

Don't want to hijack the thread or anything, but I also am in the process of adding lights to my grow. The question would be, won't these new fuller spectrum hps bulbs be a good compromise? I have done much reading from the manufacturers, that doesn't mean much when they are trying to sell their product.

There is a link to the fact that sex is not predetermined in a seedling. Tells how to help influence them into being female.
But thank you choempi for thinking that i don't know what im talking about, maybe you should do more research before you say someone is wrong. Dick.
I have very successfully used birth control pills (estrogen) to get ALL females from multiple bag-seed grows...You can definitely influence the sex of the seed.

As far as the lights go...

MH is great for veg because I have found a tighter node spacing when vegged with MH vs. HPS, and given it has about 20K less lumens it seems easier on the younger plants coming from the cloner.

HPS, in my experience, stretches the plants more, which for my system works great in conjunction with MH. But I wont use it again for vegging due to the amount of stretch.

Agreed, but unless you have successfully proven otherwise i will go with this, i have done a lot of research on the subject as i am not a fan of feminized seeds and want as many females as possible. However you probably also don't believe you can get a male from feminized seeds if you stress it enough, but it does happen.
