Seed Storage

Dude that bought the seeds, so they would be seperate from the grow, told me the seed site web said to store seeds like in a small ziplock. Those ziplocks go into another container that has rice.

Well when the seeds were new/fresh I had almost 100% germ rate. Now 2 grows later less than 50% germ rate.

Could be I picked the best looking seeds to germ first but I think the rice ain't right. Does the seed not have to store a small amount of moister to eventually germ? Would'nt the rice tend to extract all the moister from the seed. Almost sure some of the ziplocks may have not been totally sealed.

It's important to keep them cool. Store seeds in the fridge.

Seeds are best at 20% moisture. Once they reach 80% moisture the germination mechanism kicks in. You might have dried them out too much. Try letting them dry out, then germ them again if you still have them.

Thanks Bro. I got rid of the dry rice. Think I should put something in there to add moister back. Oh well not that many left. Probably need to work an attitude order anyway.

ive stored seeds for awhie just in a jar in a cool dark area... i read somewhere to put them in the freezer, never have tried this method

That's what I'm afraid of. I think you can keep them too dry. It may have been what caused my germ rate to fall drastically?????

no, I was sayin' the exact opposite. I bought silica gel packs from a seed company (vegetable) to store seeds with. I grew lettuce seed that was 8 years old stored with it., they have a maximum life of 3 stored normaly
I'm gonna test some seeds I grew 3 years ago to see how they are.

how are you germing the seeds what method are you using some methods show deficiencies in their results as seeds get older, I like to rough up old seeds very gently with an emery board like for filing your nails and if they are really old let them sit in water for about 12 hours or so, then i then just pop em right into soil or rockwool cubes or rapid rooters depending on if your going with soil or hydro.

I was using the peat disk and getting good results. Last set tried on paper towels and had 75% I guess. These are different than the ones stored before. Like the idea of maybe roughing them up with an emory board. Hmmm

I did read the link frmrboi. He stated the seed was a living organism but wants to remove all the moister. Won't removing all the moister kill anything? I'm keeping in the fridge from now on.

apparantely not, as stated before I've been using the dessicant for dozens of years on vegetable seeds.
I doubt you can get them 100 % dry anyways.
I'm popping a dozen homemade 3 year old seeds under paper towels tonight to see how they are. (They came from crap weed so it will be no loss to me)

I flunked Biology anyway. LOL Twas the long flowing blond hair of Miss Cambell. Started getting a stiffy 2 periods before her class.
