I just bought a 400w HPS bulb from lowes a couple of weeks ago. Working great so far.

Yes to the HPS as long as it works with your ballast. Ditto with the MH the catch is your cheating yourself by going with a generic standard MH bulb as the light does not produce as much growth per watt as a horticultural MH.

Those systems seem to be HPS only unless you buy one that is made only to handle a MH. Now you can use the same HPS ballast and get a MH conversion bulb and run it on the same ballast. Its what i use on my 250, i use the conversion for veg and then the HPS for flower.

Yeah, they will do fine.

If you have a buddy that works at a warehouse, just get him to grab you one.. Most warehouse lighting is 400w MH.

It doesn't say anything about MH in that title though, nor does it say that it is digital/switchable, so I am guessing that this particular model is for HPS only.

When I set up last spring, I got complete digital systems that came with both bulbs (600w) for about $220 on eBay.
