I just got my ballast from a local hydro shop. A 400w Magnetic HPS ballast..

Any Magnetic HPS ballast will also run a MH..

I have been using this one for months and it has worked great for me:
http://www.amazon.com/Electronic-Switchable-Hydroponic-Pressure-GYO2002/dp/B002J7PYSU

Price was right and it comes with both MH & HPS bulbs also.

Just a suggestion.
These are the units that I have as well. I have 4 plants in flowering under a 400w HPS bulb in 1 room. And I have 6 more in Veg in another room under the 400w MH. It really is a great deal considering if you buy 2 units... you have a spare bulb for each just in case anything goes wrong. I highly recommend this unit.

to some degree, the digital ones can not do this due to the frequency. An HPS digital ballast needs to have a conversion bulb in it. the main arch to light the bulb will destroy a typical MH.

But you are right the magnetic ballasts can run wither, still gives it a little less life time but its not as aggressive on the bulb as the digital ones are.
I prefer magnetic anyway, way easier to repair.

Lights aren't illegal, dude. Doesn't matter if they're horticulture grade or not... I'd be more hesitant to send seeds to a PO box then to send a light right to my front door.

can anyone tell me if this light http://www.amazon.com/400w-HPS-Hortilux-Bulb-Pressure/dp/B000BZ98BQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1293576587&sr=1-1 will work with this ballast http://www.hydrofarm.com/pb_detail.php?itemid=9879

reason im confused again is at the bottom of the amazon page it says this

Works with SS10, Harvest Pro Elite, and Galaxy 400w ballasts.

don't think thats the ballast i have but the lady sold me the MH light...this one http://www.amazon.com/400-MH-Hortilux-Bulb-Halide/dp/B0032JUKY2/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1293577379&sr=1-4 and said it will work with the ballast...it's the exact same brand and wattage...just a metal halide bulb...so shouldnt both the hps and mh work with my ballast?

hope someone understands what im asking here lol

those bulbs will work, but I wouldn't recommend them. Eye hortilux bulbs are not made to the same standards as all other hps bulbs according to an email I saw attributed to Lumatek. I would recommend a lumatek hps or any other brand than Eye hortilux which seem to fail more often in digital ballasts. Plus they are just too expensive.

This is the one I use, love it. Puts out more lumens than the Eye bulb also

thx for link but im stuck buying local not online...she already sold me the hortilux mh bulb for 75.00...I didn't buy the hps one though since I dont need it at the moment...looking into just going cheap at home depot then if those eye hortilux bulbs are not worth the money...what about this 20.00 bulb at home depot...am I defeating the purpose going so cheap?

I used a sylvania 400W hps bulb that I got at lowes for a year before I got the lumatek bulb. It worked just fine also. I would think the phillips would be ok also if your local shop doesn't carry Lumatek. Have you inquired about different bulbs they carry that you may not know about? my local shop has all the bulbs in a back room, not on display so I had to inquire about all the brands they carried.

Not true. Digital ballasts are designed to fire either bulb. Now some HPS bulb makers will not warranty their bulbs when used in electronic ballasts. Hortilux being one of them. But...Lumateks new dimmable ballasts with soft start technology will fire them just fine with no issues.

Most think this but its not true. The only difference between a magnetic HPS and MH is the igniter needed to fire HPS bulbs. With a MH bulb installed the igniter does not even come into play and the ballast operates the same as a MH ballast.

very incorrect. Unless it is a switchable hps/mh ballast it will not run the other type.
Sorry but you are incorrect. Read my above post. Dont waste your money on conversion bulbs unless you need to go from MH to HPS. Or buy an igniter and install it in your mag MH ballast......
