What can I say I'm growing, that grows like weed but is legal??

I'm a newbie and so I like to ask questions to help me learn. Obviously going around asking people questions, then answering "pot" when they ask what I'm growing, is not a great idea.

So I was wondering if there is a legal alternative I can substitute for weed when asking general growing advice??

when i go to a hydroshop and ask question they know what im talking about long before i say what im growing..

I've heard tomatoes is a good one to use... most grow shops don't ask, I talk about growing but they never mention or ask exactly what it is. I'm sure they have an idea... that's whats great about this site... talk about it all you want :)

it's one of those, don't ask don't tell kinda deals... if they ask just make some thing up... anything really, if you think about it, it's no ones business but your own..

Our grow shop has ALL the good stuff to grow pot but THAT word is never mentioned...and although WE all know,talking POT is a no-no..IMHO, it's not cool to talk about it especially in states where it's not legal yet.
I would have to wonder why you'd want to talk about it and risk yourself when you can ask anything here anonymously......

My hydro guys are one of best knowledge bases I have. They take my excess clones from me and love it when i take them some of my harvest, now i get great discounts freebies invites to out of hours product demo's etc etc.


BUT I dont advise telling them what you are growing, if they talk to you about it once they suss you out then its your choice.


I was a noob when i first used the shop and it took them 2 visits to their shop and 300GBP of my money to quickly realise what i was growing then info and product help came flooding in lol.


I now am considerably friendly with them lol.

Tomatoes and Cannabis are extremely dissimilar.

I suggest Hops. People grow it to brew their own beer and it is in the same genus family as Cannabis. Genetically you can't get much closer. They are also flowering plants.

Roses are actually a good one too. Despite being perennial roses and cannabis enjoy about the same levels of nutrients and soil pH. The rose growing community has been around for years and they have some really good stuff to grow with.

I suggest you steer clear of anything that is a fruit or vegetable. Basil, tomatoes, chard, peppers... they are all just a little too dissimilar.

Ok thanks for the tips.

I'm just preparing myself for potential situations in the future I might find myself in, either in getting help/tips, or to justify certain products I'm buying. If I came across a very knowledgable grower, I'd like to be able to have a coversation and maybe pick up tips, without giving away what I'm growing. Especially with nutrients. So thanks Snow, that was exactly what I wanted to hear!

if you come across problems, then the RUI community can help you. dont trust all advice given, alot of beginners hand out help even though they have no clue.

There are 5 main problems 1st time growers experience in my opinion.

1. Over Fertilizing
2. Overwatering
3. pH of water and medium
4. Harvesting too early/late
5. Deficiency
