T5 growroom

I have a restricted space, 1' x 4', that made me decide on a 4' - 4 bulb fixture. It is rated at 20,000 lumens. How many lumens is that p/ square ft.? Also, I have one fixture above the plants and one fixture mounted to the wall so that i would have the second 20,000 lumen source that would be directed at the under growth. I know that doesn't equal 40,000 lumens but I was wondering if this is an efficient way to go seeing as the issue of heat prevents using an HID.

Also I have heard 2"-5" from the tops, which is best? Is the grow time longer?

The last question is that for veg. I am using all blue bulbs and have red bulbs for flowering. when i first switch the light cycle should I use half blue and half red for a bit then switch too all red for the end?:dunce::leaf:

I use full spectrum throughout the whole grow. In my T5 you'll find 3 red and 3 blue bulbs at all times.

Why do you use 1/2 red 1/2 blue? Does it promote overall growth all the way through? Why not blue to red? I'm a total newb so any info will help. i just want to understand where you are coming from. I mean have you tried all blue then red? or have you always gone 1/2 each? The reason i ask is so you may give me insight on what the plants do different. I have had GREAT results with less I'm just upgrading.

Also, what kind of yields do you get? also do you supercrop or top? If so does it help that much or do you just let the trophy kola grow?
How far away do you keep your lights from the tops.

and finally do you think that the 2 sources of 20,000 lumens will be decent for my setup and 4 plants?

Let's see if I can address all your questions:
1.) I use 3 blue, and 3 red as I have always heard full spectrum throughout the whole grow is better than switching spectra from vegetative to flowering. (From Wikipedia: A test done by Ed Rosenthal found that when a room was set up using both high pressure sodium (HPS) and metal halide (MH) lamps the plants in between the two lights did better than those under MH alone but not as well as those under HPS. However, certain plants (as cannabis) can be grown successfully under both types of light.)
2.) Yes, it promotes overall growth throughout the whole cycle . My buds looks frosty, hard, and big.
3.) Have I tried all blue and then all red? No. This is my first grow, and I kept hearing time and time again that full spectrum is the way to go.
4.) I'm expecting about 1.5 from the girl I have under the lights now.
5.) I would say LST or topping is your best bet.
6.) No more than 6" from the light.

What is LST? If I were to top I would supercrop. But yeah, what is LST? And do these method increase the yield?

Yes they increase yields. LST is low stress training. Keep reading around here and you will learn your way.

Yes, broadsiding the plants is a great idea. Rotate your plants every few days and your lower pop corn buds will be outstanding.

Does the main kola still form if i super crop? When should I bend it? I am afraid to do this as it my 3rd grow. How much will the yield increase and how fast will the side growth happen? I am assuming that most of the extra growth happens in flowering? Does this method make more "tops" or what. i am ignorant to this.

No broadsiding is you putting a second set of t-5 s shining from the side. An L shape of light in other words. I was suggesting also rotating your plants so that all sides took advantage of the broadside lighting.

I tried supercropping my first grow of Arjans Haze and found that it was VERY effective.

Dont be scared, just take it easy, I found that by gripping the branched stem inbetween my index finger and thumb and crushing it till i heard a few crunches then roatating it 90 degrees in the same spot and crunching it again the branch started to bend very easy.

If you get a split, which i did, i would leave it for the plant to repair. I found that the growth for the next couple of days slowed, but it was then followed by a pretty violent growth spurt.

Once bent, the plant started to repare itself very quickly creating a knuckle type growth around the bend and then grew up over creating a cola. Try it on a couple of branches at first till you get the hang of it. Hope this has helped.

Yeah, it takes some practice but that's a good description. Keep Popsicle sticks and band aids around. Sometimes you have to build a quick crutch when you break a branch. Think of it like an arc, not a bend. I stress about an inch in both directions where I want to bend it. Seems to reduce the amount of stress the plant goes through.

side lighting is helpful, but be careful, you don't want to be lighting the bottom of the leaves, that's wasteful....
