My Curing MJ is staring to have a weird smell :(

Hey guys its been a long time since ive been on rollitup infact it took me 10miutes to figure out how to create a new thread lol.

Anyways i have some Buds of White Berry which smelt great when on the plant and when they were drying. From last week i have started Curing my MJ in a mason jar they have been curing roughly around 6-8days. The problem what i am having now is that the bud is startinng to smell abit musty/hayish on the outside of the buds.

I have been doing abit of research and people are saying that its fine and its normal and the Fruity smell shoud come back after a few weeks of curing but i need to be sure on thay you know lol.


The plant was not given any fertiliser, just all organic growing no chemicals. Oops i frogot to mention that i left the buds to dry for 4days aswell.

I dryed the buds untill the outside of the bud was abit crisp, The stems do not snap, What would you reccomend me to do? should i take out the bud and allow it to dry abit longer then put them back in the mason jar

I am a complete noob but my understanding is that the stems need to snap when bent! Even if the outsides of the buds are crispy and dry, it doesn't mean the insides of the bud are dry. I would imagine the smell is mold forming in the buds because of the moisture still in them. IMO you need to take the buds out and dry them until the stems snap when bent. If you already have bud mold then the first thing I would do is get those buds away from my grow op. Spores can travel in air and really screw a op up.

Again, I am completely new to growing but have read so much info I am surprised I can still remember my name. Hopefully some of the vets here can correct me if I am wrong.

One more thing, if the buds do have mold already I have read that it can seriously screw your lungs and respiratory system up. Make hash or something out of it. Don't smoke it!

If that stem don't snap put it back!

It's mold. Why would anyone tell you that the smell will "magically" come back in a few weeks? Curing is done to oenhance smell and taste but if it smells great it should smell greater. Not smell great, smell bad, then smell great again. Deff dry more.

if your buds are not dry (stems snap) get them out of the mason jars asap before they start moulding hang them back up till they snap then cure them in mason jars (make sure you burp you jars daily)

the thing that is odd to me is the fact that smell took so long to appear for you, normally on 6-8 days of curing and burping the smell has already came and went and the buds dont really smell like anything. i wouldnt worry yet but i would look over all the buds very closely.

You dont have to dry till the stem snaps, in fact most people advise against it. the buds should feel dry to the touch while the stems are still somewhat bendy.

Oh wow, I have read quite a bit of this forum and know a handful of people that I would take advice from and they all say to dry til the stem snaps. Why do people advise against it?

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying you are wrong as I am not that experienced but curious what the down falls would be.

BEND NOT SNAP! BEND NOT SNAP! Etch it into the back of your skull. If you want to cure correctly, you need moisture to SLOWLY escape the bud. By waiting until the stem snaps, a large portion of the moisture in the bud has already dissipated from it. When your stems bend, you've still got a bit of moisture to work with. I wish I could find it, but there was a guide on here for the perfect cure using hygrometers inside the mason jars and burping each time the RH got to a certain %. It gave a certain range to always have your jarred bud at. If anyone knows what I'm talking about, link that shit up.

Also, curing is a process. It's not a quick week and you've got it to it's prime state.

Auzzie is spot on. And 61% humidity in the jar is optimal. Drying and curing is an art you learn the same as growing......... You can even drown your plant the last 10 days or so to begin the fermentation process. Check out some of Riddlemes threads....

Take it down while the stems still have some flex, but the product feel dry on the outside. This is a perfect opportunity to drop the dry-feeling flowers onto a screen and collect prime-quality kief that would otherwise get lost in the jar.

Jar the product, along with a Caliber III hygrometer. One can be had on Ebay for ~$20. Having tested a number of hygrometers - digital and analog - this model in particular produced consistent, accurate results. Then, watch the readings:

+70% RH - too wet, needs to sit outside the jar to dry for 12-24 hours, depending.

65-70% RH - the product is almost in the cure zone, if you will. It can be slowly brought to optimum RH by opening the lid for 2-4 hours.

60-65% RH - the stems snap, the product feels a bit sticky, and it is curing.

55-60% RH - at this point it can be stored for an extended period (3 months or more) without worrying about mold. The product will continue to cure.

Below 55% RH - the RH is too low for the curing process to take place. The product starts to feel brittle. Once you've hit this point, nothing will make it better. Adding moisture won't restart the curing process; it will just make the product wet. If you measure a RH below 55% don't panic. Read below:

Obviously, the product need time to sweat in the jar. As such, accurate readings won't be seen for ~24 hours, assuming the flowers are in the optimal cure zone. If you're curing the product for long-term storage, give the flowers 4-5 days for an accurate reading. If the product is sill very wet, a +70% RH reading will show within hours. If you see the RH rising ~1% per hour, keep a close eye on the product, as it's likely too moist. [/FONT]

if your buds are so dry that the stems snap curing is almost pointless. over dried buds don't cure, they store. i don't have fancy meters to measure moisture in the jar, so i use the bud's "stickiness" to guage when they need to be burped. if the buds start to stick together or to the jar, it's time to burp. if the buds stick together but don't separate by shaking the jar, they might be too wet. if the buds never stick to anything after a day or two in the sealed jar, they might be too dry. the musty hay smell could be the beginnings of mold, but i've smelled some strange smells during curing that did in fact go away. if your buds are constantly sticking together after just a few hours in the jar they may have been too wet when you put them in.
