ln my chimney, below the flue, there is another cap.
Can l exhaust my grow room through this hole if my exhaust is on all the time ?
And if the furnace is off, will i have any problems with carbon m being pushed back through the furnace ?

Just keep in mind a hot chimney on a FLIR display in the summer or spring is going to stand out like a sore thumb. It's not a bad idea though. I saw a write up on venting exhaust out a sewer pipe too.... :(

i'm curently venting into my attic but i've got a condensation problem and have to vent else where. because me exhaust from grow room runs right by this cap, could i vent through this if my grow room exhaust is on all the time?
not to worried about stelth, so long as it works.

you can connect the exhaust from both rooms into the chimney, yes. don't worry about flir, many homes heat water with their house furnace,in the summer as well, heat is supposed to come out the chimney...many homes have gas operated hot water heaters that need venting...some homes even have dryers that need venting...don't vent into the house.

you got to think about how the air will look leaving the chimney too. the hot air passively escaping from from a furnace is gonna look alot different from the hot air being forcefully expelled by say a 700m3/h fan...

not really worried about stuff like that, just concerned about carbon m coming back in some how, have hot water tank and furnace to worry about.

I also vent out my chimney, but the only thing hooked to it is my exhaust. It a beautiful thing. Cant hear my scrubber fan at all.

Don't know for sure,, purely speculation..
But I'm thinking that by the time it gets thru the duct, up the chimney and out, it wouldbe pretty well cooled?
And definately no more than a gas hot water heater would show (which is probably it's intent when installed?).

I'm thinking of that for the odor mostly. You bring a interesting point though. I wonder how it really would show? Do they pick up that fine a variation in temps?
And do they adjust it that finely (if adjustable)? If so it would probably pick up a gnats ass farting too. :-(

klonerone: ls your chimney same setup as mine, with the cap right under flue for the chimney ? do you run your growroom exhaust all the time ?

It works. Chimney creats a natural draw up through the hole. if you are worried about affecting the furnace, put a damper between the furnace and chimney(should have one anyways)and your good to go...its science...you also rid the room of smells safely. I freakin do it...

canon : not to worried about the heat issue. like you say, by the time it goes that distance and everything. but is it safe to use the hole right under the furnace exhaust as long as i run the growroom exhaust fans all the time? i don't want carbon m coming back into the house some way.

This is something I'm considering but do not know for sure how to do it. My room is under my chimney and I'm not sure if it will work. How did you get into your chimney? By stealth or just straight in it?

For me, I'd have to try it and see. I believe most of the furnaces that I've seen are forced air in the burner. It needs to go somewhere so it's blowing into the chimney. I suspect it couldbe overpowered with your vent blower at some point IF it's all the same flue.
If you can get to the top and look at it, you may be in real luck and have a seperate flue for the smaller duct vent. water heaters are convection. No power vent (generally) though some add it on for whatever reason. Better built homes would probably be seperate vent for each.

My chimney is for a coal / wood stove we've not had hooked up for years and don't plan on it again either. (so I'm "in" ;-))

Go to Youtube and watch FLIR videos... There is one from England where the cop talks about specifically looking for venting out of a chimney in the summer because no one is having a fire.

As for the other comment about a furnace and a dryer venting too, they have their own vents. a household furnace by code cannot share a fireplace chimney. The furnace would have it's own exhaust.

I was merely pointing out the chimney heat issue for our friends in England. Here in the US, they 'supposedly' need a warrant to use FLIR on your home. Not sure what that means when they chase a suspect into your hood at night and your windows are warmer than everyone else's and stand out on screen like a sore thumb. FLIR can detect differences as little as one degree. The cops call growers 'hot heads' and they look for heat. Do not underestimate law enforcement. That is my only point, not saying you can't vent out of a chimney.

Just vent out your dryer vent. Every house has one. Every single one emits heat. FLIR scans aren't going to be sitting around for 12+ hours to make sure you aren't just doing laundry, they have better shit to do.

There ya go, at least that would not stand out in the summer. I'm no avionics expert, but I've heard that it costs thousands of dollars per flight hour, so I'm sure that the pilot won't hang around to time your laundry cycles. :)

Yeah the flights are really expensive, and so is the equipment, usually when they're doing a scan they're spending at most 5-10 minutes to scan an area and then moving on unless they see something out of the ordinary, in that case they might circle around and call in the coordinates, but if their supervisor finds out they spent an hour circling a house because they saw heat coming from a dryer vent, I'm pretty sure those guys are out of a job.
