Serapis-
"FLIR can detect differences as little as one degree" YEOW!!!!! I was thinking maybe 20 Deg. at best. Thanks.

Okay, vent for heat, but not smell-
Chimney for smell but not heat.

Is there another? (LOL)

i remember once i said it was okay to vent in the chimney thing to someone...pretty much the same discussion thus far too.

the dude never mentioned his house was a condo and he had an upstairs neighbor sharing his flue....
i still feel kinda guilty about it...

Dryer vent wont let out smell as long as you're smart enough to have a carbon filter. If you don't have one, you're just begging to be noticed.

Pro tip, get the most pungent mulch you can find, cedar works great, plant some lavender and other plants that give off strong scents and you're neighbors wont smell a thing. If you live somewhere where you cant have plants outdoors year round due to temperatures, have a backup vent that goes to your chimney. Install a Y duct with a switchable valve to set which way you want to vent if you want to be that paranoid about it.

Honestly the dryer vent is the way to go.

If you're dead set on the chimney idea, just get a portable AC unit and attach it with a Y to your vent and have it running when you have exhaust going. During the summer the air should come out of your chimney pretty damn close to the outdoor air temps to the point where most FLIR units would just write it off as normal heat buildup from appliances in your home

in the summer, when the furnace is not being used, don't you think the sun beating on the roof will raise the temps?? I know around here, during summer, roofs get FREAKING hot!! That flir won't matter...

Per Serapis' advice, Go watch some FLIR / YouTube.. I did.
About 3 hrs worth.
Kept looking for answers to different ideas.

People in FLIR do not seem to have their breath (+90 deg) showing, neither do the dogs.
Didn't notice any window style AC outputs on homes.
Didn't see any indications of sewage drain vents on smaller homes. (Generally easily felt if on the roof)
Also watched a series compiled by a reformed(?) cop / DEA that trained dogs.

Thanks Serapis for steering me there.

Have a buddy with a card that say's he's golden. (But way over the legal to do card limit!) In a 8X10 room he's running 4 - 1Ks, inside room, it feels like 100 Deg. and humid in there (plants not looking good, but anyways) I'll bet you his grow shows like some in the vidios?

However, for my little personal (under card limit) with a 250 vented inside grow area, mixed, and expelled at 5-10 deg above ambient. Then travelling 10 ft. to the cellar and another (in the cool cellar) 15 ft to the chimney and out I honestly don't think would show very well. I may be kicking 5 deg at most on the chimney top? I'm thinking it would probably exhaust cooler than room temp? (Sometimes it's nice being small).

Anyone disagree with that?
If my train of thoughts are wrong I'd rather find out from you guys before the knock on the door. - Thanks.

Chimney for smell?????????????????? No worky....won't smell in your yard but the downwind neighbours will be all over it! Trust me....I have the good fortune of good neighbours.....so now I have a filter and I vent out the chimney......get a filter....chimneys do nothing for odour control.....just think...evr smell somebody's fireplace? Filter/Fan/Chimney=no worries.\
good luck

From what I'm interpretting, they're not taking much notice of grey (warm) areas as such.
Looks like they concentrate on white (or nearly so) much warmer hot signatures.
An exhaust cooler, dispersion, dilution would appear to foil the interpretation of the signature.
HOT air leaks around windows, eves, screen / open windows, outside direct ducting of actual hot humid air seems to really turn white in the vidios and are a definate give away.

That's just my thoughts from scrutinizing the YouTubes.

I do have a large can filter on the exhaust blower, and a scrubber that's free standing that gets added during flower. (neither run in veg)
I'm saying they work about 85 - 95%.
As a smoker, I don't smell anything at all and I try hard.
BUT, the wife is a non-smoker and she can pick it up in the house sometimes,,, with it vented to the cellar. Don't know if it's coming back up from the cellar or just leaking from the room. I think it's mostly noticable when I'm cranking the blower hard towrd flower's end. (Maybe)
That 15% I want out. In July / August I want some extra heat out too.

Thanks, I've still got to work on this.
Probably easier if I just get another inline carbon and run duelies.

Filters and carbon were new for last grow (not stale) and the wife smelt it, so..
Not worried about the wife,, I just don't want other non-smokers(?) picking up on it.

sorry guys, but to clarify it again , not worried about FLIR (never even heard about this till today, don,t have a clue). Our city dosen't even have a police chopper, I've had 2 rooms with 400 hps for the last 10 years. not worried about smell or anything. I've been venting into the attic for years. can't smell nothing. My question was can i vent into the chimney without interupting the draft in the chimney and somehow getting carbon m back into the house ? have family and don't want to take no chance on that happening.

lol, wondering the same thing myself GG, and no matter how many times you say it ppl are stuck on FLIR, FLIR does not matter if your legal!!!!

I would make sure you have a damper on the furnace and get a good carbon monoxide detector and try it.
