I am not sure where to put this thread... I am on the hunt for a cheap light for a closet grow. I came across some things on craigs list like an entire grow cab with nutes, 400w light, timers .... everything. I wanted to get some other opinions on if you think it is safe to buy something like that in that manner.

You could even check your local home depot for like a hard plastic Rubbermaid shelf closet thing.

you want at least a 600hps... u can also purchase a blue conversion bulb for when your plants are in the vegetative stage.

No, he's just a moron. I feel like a lot of people use more light than they need, or don't harness it all correctly.

Yes, sometimes less can be more. Not in this instance. And not w/any plants development.
The OP can recover all of his initial costs w/ the addition of an extra 200 watts.

Some people^ enjoy the slow train. If that is ones objective, then step it down to fluorescent for vegetative, then use the dim light of your television for the flowering cycle. The best use for 250s and 400s are to cauterize hemorrhoids (you get the idea).
I'll refrain from name calling and leave it to the REAL EXPERTS.

i've seen someone on this site get over 19 zips off of one plant grown under one of those dim light televsions.. its all about knowing wtf your doing m8...

i have bought equipment off of craigslist. just dont meet at your house and dont buy anything which is illegal where you live. the seller usually just wants to get rid of their stuff and they need the money if it seems like they are interested in anything else i would be suspicious. they should not need any personal identifiable information from you pay cash.

he thinks u need a 600 hps due to the slight lumen efficiency. this is invalid.

400w is what u want for an enclosed cab with a cooltube.

u can use a 600 if u get a tent....

Yes a lot of it is what you know, but a lot of it is science too.
Everyone knows that the more intense the light the bigger denser buds you get.
Not to mention that your plants grow faster also.

I agree with the above, don't buy on the promise of "I'll ship it to you"
Pay cash, and if you are going to the sellers house, get your buddy to drive you.
Buy bulbs new.
Clean everything very well before you introduce it into your growing environment.
I occasionally see grow equipment on CL or similiar sites, and there are some good deals to be had. I recently responded to an ad, which turned out to be from a grow store and got myself a GH aeroflo36 for MUCH less than retail.... it ships today! (oh, that last line contradicts my earlier don't fall for "I'll ship it", but I checked out the store and had my local shop vouch for the guy!)
