First Grow..Bumpy Road

Hey guys. My first grow and my AK-48 plant is 29 days from when the seed first broke open. The leaves look a little wrinkly . . . wasn't sure if I might be over / under watering. It was under a CFL for about 7 days, then on an 18/6 (Veg) for about 10 days. From there I put it right into flow as I didn't want it to get too big. My cabinet is only 4' tall.

PH is adjusted to 6.0 and my water and fert mix (Flora Nova Bloom) is at appx 1/3 full strength. I do not yet have a PPM tester . . . that'll be purchased soon.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I might be worried for nothing but I rather be safe than sorry and get some opinions from the experts!

Thx :leaf:

I looked her over today and she's filling out even more. The leaves are also not as dry compared to a week ago. So balancing out the PH, lightening up the amount of fert and raising the light to about 14 - 16" seemed to do the trick.

You may want to make up a foliar spray diluted with some organic compost tea or make your own brew up.

They look a little dry and stressed and will help if you are suffering from any deficencies. Also if possible steer clear of using aluminum foil for reflective material. How much light are you hitting them with in ur cab for flower? Do you have good venting and air circulation?

You're right on the money. I moved the light up yesterday (about 16" from canopy now). The leaves that were a little scorched feel a lot softer and they're looking a little greener to. For lighting I have a 150W HPS. I guess that's why at first I thought I could get away with having it so close. I was actually 6" from the top when I started. They looked great after 10 days under the CFL . . . didn't take long for the leaves to get singed on the edges and turn yellow. First grow . . . live and learn I guess.

For reflective material I'm using 2mm Mylar. For my flowering cabinet I plan on using that white plastic material (not sure of the proper name).

For air flow I have a passive intake on the bottom of the cabinet. For exhause I am using an inline 100 CFM fan that pulls air via a 9" Carbon Filter. That runs 24/7.

There is also a small clip on fan inside that hits the plant (not head on of course) and that runs on the same timer as the light. I am however going to replace that with an oscillating fan when I find one.

For cooling I took the top vent off the HPS and bungied a fan that blows air directly over the heat shield. That is also on the timer (on when light is on).

I'm in the process of buying a 6' cabinet for flower and use my current one for veg. The HPS will go in the new cabinet and a 175W Metal Halide in the veg one.

I think I'll just buy another 150W HPS for the flower cab. Yeah a 250W would be better. But (2) 150's will spread the light out and of course I really like the fact they cause minimal heat issues, plus I have one already. They're a lot smaller then the 250's and 400's as well. My next grow is going to be (3) plants (all different strains) so I think 300W for flower should be good. I only grow for my own personal use . . . any extra I'll give away to a few trust worthy and close friends.

Gotta hit the hay but I'll post up some more pics tomorrow.

Thank you very much for the feedback. :leaf:

I will definitely do that. Gonna be near the Hydro store tomorrow anyway so I'll have them recommend something.

Just an update. Here are a few pics of the AK-48 @ Day 35. Fortunately she's filling out and the issues she was having are not getting any worse. I also did some LST so she is tied down at a 45 degree angle. The weak nodes were trimmed and now the ones around 3/4's of the plant are filling out. This also allowed me to keep it short as I currently only have a Veg Chamber thus limited vertical space.

Trimmed some of the large fan leaves that were blocking the bud sites and did some LST (first pic demonstrated). The 2nd and 3rd pic shows how the canopy is filling out nicely. This seems to be working out well especially being that my cabinet is only 4' high. SCROG just isn't going to work in my current setup, but for my first grow I'm happy with the progress so far.

Glad I did the LST. Nice even light coverage. She's starting to form crystals on the leaves surrounding the buds. Included a shot of one of the buds as well. Still no clue on how much she'll yield. If I get an ounce I'll be ecstatic as it's just for personal enjoyment.

Buds seem to be developing nicely. I was skeptical about only having a 150HPS. But for one plant I think it's doing the trick. She looks healthy . . . hopefully she'll stay that way until the end. Hoping to be ready to harvest in 25 - 30 days.

Growmomma: I've kept things real simple and so far it's worked out well. I'll keep posting once a week. And I'll also do a final report (total weight after drying) and a smoke report as well (after one week of curing).

Thank you for checking out my journal. If you ever have any questions on my setup I'll be happy to give you any details your interested in.

Here's to some good future smoke!!!

Peace :leaf:

Your plants are looking great man. I just ordered some ak48s myself. Im subbed, gotta see how this turns out.
Appreciate it man. Gonna take a few pics this evening so I'll post them up soon. I will say I can't even touch the thing anymore . . . fingers damn near stick together from the resin. Of course I'm not complaining though. ; )

A note to everyone . . . I'll be a little slammed at work for the next 10 days or so. But the week after next I'll post some new pics. She'll be about 71 - 72 days from seed. So thank you to all in advance for your patience in the delay of the next set of pics. But hopefully they'll be worth the wait and I'll have some good progress to show off!

Bubleonichronic: Thanks for the kind words and for checking out my thread. BTW I like your Avatar. Man if I can get better at this and get some buds like that, I'll be one happy camper.

Peace everyone. :leaf:

About 3 - 5% of the pistils are just starting to turn amber. So I'm thinking I'll probably hit close to that 90 day mark for harvest. I now understand what "patience" really means. :-?

Your's are looking great though, good grow!
