Dubious Garden Grow

It's about that time of the year again, and spring is just about here. This next week I'll be clearing a small spot near the greenhouse for a veggie and herb garden. I started germinating seeds this last Sunday and I've already got a few sprouting. Here is what's germinating:
Rosemary, Lavender, Sweet Basil, Cilantro, Dill, Stevia, Heirloom tomato, Cherry tomato, Jalapeno, Bell pepper, Artichokes.

I also have some non-edibles germinating:
Esperanza Yellow Bells, Green Tea Tree (Camellia sinesis), Jasmine tobacco (Nicotiana alata), Dames Rocket, and Luna Pink Swirl Hibiscus.

Should be a fun season! Happy growing.

sounds lie it is gona be a nice grow man. where did you get the artichoke, i cant find any around here except for strats that are about 40 miles away

Yeah I'm looking forward to it. I think I picked up artichoke seeds from home depot, and I think I've seen them at walmart too.

ive checked out a bunch of seed shops here and cant find them, i did find a nursery that sells starts later in the year but i want to do it from seed.

im also trying to get some pine apple to root as well. im gonna start today ill update it in my thread later

That sucks they don't sell the seeds in your area-- if they sold starters around these parts I probably would of done that as I've never grown them. I've got a pineapple that I grew from cutting the top of a pineapple. I've had it for over a year now but it hasn't ever produced. Maybe this year I'll get a pineapple. the guide for pineapples that i am using says it wont produce unless it is mature and that can take up to 5 years and it has to have enough light for flowering and what not, im hoping i will get mine to produce. it will be a house plant in the winter and a outdoor plant in summer i might keep it under grow lights in the winter so it will grow quicker

Good info MC-- mine has been living in the greenhouse, but got pretty beat up this winter. It's recovery nicely but it looks like I've got some time before I get my own pineapple!

I decided to use one of those 72 cell seed starters with a lid for germinating this season. It's brought inside at night, still a little to cold for germing, and left outside during the day. Well today was the first day that I began upgrading some of the small starters as their roots began to show-- the artichokes and heirloom tomatoes were upgraded from the starter tray to larger pots until they're ready for the garden. I also cleaned out the greenhouse, and made room for my "other" grow. The bell pepper's, cilantro, dill and basil seeds have popped too, I'll probably upgrade them within the week. I can't wait for these guys to get a little bigger so I can put them into the ground! Not much to look at yet but the first 2 pics are of the artichokes-- they've got cool leaves. The other 2 pics are of the sprouts in the tray. Cheers.

i didnt even know you had a pine apple, did you root it, or did you buy a plant?
i just got some artichoke seeds the other day and need to plant them. all my seeds have came up to the artichoke look alot like the melons, and cucumbers i have started.
when do you plan on putting them outside

We did have 2, but one died last winter (that one was bought from home depot) and the one we still have was grown from a pineapple top. I thought it was a little over a year old but my wife assures me that it is at least two years old-- we've got so many plants I lose track! I couldn't tell you what kind it is, but I'll take a pic and put it up.

Glad to see you were able to find some artichoke seeds MC. I think I'll leave them in the greenhouse at least for the next few weeks to let them get more established. They're not more than an inch or two tall and the recent bug incidents make me hesitant to put anything outside until it can handle itself. I've never grown artichokes before so it's all new to me. Do you have any idea how wide the plant gets? I don't want to cramp it's style in the garden.

ya the pack i bought only had 9 seeds though kinda a low count but all well. this is my first time growing them to. but the back of the sed pack said that they can get up to 6 ft tall and up to 6 ft wide( that takes a few years though i think) it also said that it will produce the first year but to trim back after harvest and the next year it will be even bigger and more productive, it just has to be some what protected of the cold winters like placed in a green house or something, i am planning on doing mine in a 5 gal bucket so i can move in the winter. i have seen a artichoke in my city that is planted in some ones front yard and it is about 9 feet tall and 10 ft wide, its been around for about 7 years now and i think when they are that big they dont get killed by a freeze cuz theri is out every winter
