Soil Growing In a 50 gallon Fish Tank

I just dumped 40 lbs of soil into a 50 gallon fish tank. My snake died and I figured the next best thing to use the tank for was some good green. I have some left over seeds soaking that I plan on planting in the tank. I thought about using individual flower pots in the tank but I think using the sea of green method I can just grow all the plants in the same tank. Does anyone know if this is possible?

Its do-able, but i think your main issue is gonna be with drainage, if you over water theres gonna be no-where for the water to drain out.

im no expert by a long shot but its a general rule of thumb for any type of growing.

I thought sea of green involved chicken wire, or where you harvest regularly from small plants.

Anyway, it doesn't sound a very good idea to me. Better off buying some pots and using the tank to store your water when they start getting thirsty.

I dont have a closet to grow in, so I'm trying to do it out of the fish tank. I can still put the soil in individual pots or rockwool cubes and get it poppin that way. That should help the drainage factor also right. I already set up the lighting, I have 12inch florescent lights on each side of the tank and on top. I also set up two black lights and two red lights on the top and sides of the tank. I taped aluminum foil around the back and sides of the tank and I brought white fish tank rocks to place on top of the soil. Does this sould like too much?

You know I'm going to blaze my own path on this one. I'm going to try and grow all the plants in the same soil base. I have a second 25 gallon tank that I'm going to use for cloning and see if I can get all females going in the 50 gallon tank. If it fails than it fails, fuck it. What do I lose but some seeds and time. But if it works, I'm a pioneer!

you have overkill on lights, and blacklights dont work, everytime ive grown, i havent gotten much luck soaking seeds, from what ive done, ive found it just damages seeds, if you have a fish tank, you might as well just do a simple hydroponic system, its easy and cheep, you already have the tank, so that saves you about 20 bucks, and all the rest you can get for around 36 dollars or so, drainage is going to be a real problem, and try not to get too much heat, cuz if u have drainage problems, and the roots get hot, they are going to rot, have fun growing, experiment if you want, but im sticking with proven methods.

The only way to grow in a fish tank is dwc. If you try it in soil you will suffocate your plants.

are u sure that black lights damages plants? its barely in the uv-a range and isnt even harmful to the human eye. could u give me a source?

No I can't give a source, as I read it a while ago now. I read that it is harmful to plants, not harmful enough to kill them, but does actually cause them damage. I think it may provide some benefits too. I just remember facts, and I've read so much about weed.

All I can suggest is that you take the road I took and read up on the light spectrum and it's relevence to helping/harming the plants.

no, the sea of green technique requires you to be rotating new plants into your flowering room(you need to have two rooms for SOG)everey 2 or 4 weeks so that you also harvest every 2 or 4 weeks.You will also need a mother in your veg/clone room to give you a healthy supply of clones for your rotation..so if you want to use fish tanks for SOG, first you would have to make it an aerated bed by using a layer of expanded clay on the bottom and pvc pipe in each corner to allow drainage and then evaporation up through the pipes(this is also a soma bed), this will solve the drainage problem,but for SOG you will need more fish tanks to keep a rotation......if you want to use the fish tank DONT try sog make a small soma bed and grow some dank buds, i make 40 gallon soma beds ad grow 2 plants in them, they get huge and have a heavy yield having that 20 gallons each and all the space to grow roots, also the design of the soma bed allows lots of air to be brought down to the roots by the evaporation of the water up the pipes, it pulls the air down the soil..it's a passive air flow system.

u gotta have the right lights,mainly ones used to support coral will make the bud go crazy,they love the blue end of the spectrum, and those lights for coral fishtanks have lots of it=)
