So how does this compare to chernobyl, worse?
There's a scale, 1-7, with 1 being Three Mile Island I guess (not certain about that), but I am sure that 7 is Chernobyl. This, at this moment, is a 6. I don't think it needs to get much worse to match or even surpass Chernobyl.

Damn that sure isn't good.....i wish i knew more about the radiation and whatnot but is it possible that it could travel far in the atmosphere to affect other places, or just in the area?

It is not likely to cross the ocean and affect the U.S. However, that area of Japan is probably toast for years. And if it gets into the food chain over there who knows.

One of the reactor buildings is apparently storing plutonium. Why is it different than the others? Is there a civilian use for that I wonder?

Their making it sound bad on the news but I don't think its a big deal. we will all just be eating more radiation than we usually do, most of us should be fine.

The State Department is making arrangements for family members and dependents of U.S. government personnel to evacuate areas in northern Japan and is warning that all U.S. citizens should consider leaving the country as the nuclear crisis at the damaged Fukushima Daichi complex continue to unfold.
Government officials said that the U.S. will assist in evacuating any private citizens seeking to leave the country but have been unable to do so commercially.
Administration officials continued to emphasize that the evacuation is voluntary and these actions are the “lowest step” in the hierarchy of preventative steps that the State Department can take to protect U.S. citizens abroad,...
