I would cover any bucket that wasn't a cooler bucket, no matter what the color (black too), on the top and all around the side.
I bought a roll of insulated pipe wrap from Lowes for the top of my first tote.
Used the tote for 3 or 4 days, switched to these coolers and never looked back.
The pipe wrap is "R" rated with an adhesive backing and reflective aluminum top.
The roll is 1ft wide, about 10 - 12 feet long and 3/16 inch thick.
Check my pics, but I still had temp issues in my rez so I dumped it.

well i have a 4 system dwc goin in taped 5 gallon buckets, i was just wonderin if u had to tape the cooler, i guess i worded it rong though, thanks for the infor none the less

No need to tape the coolers.
They have built in UVA/UVB blocking properties.
I use 2 inch thick insulated styrofoam for my lids.
I wrap those in Aluminum Foil Tape, NOT Duct Tape.

psssst flo, think this is the one, it mounts externaly & you can direct the incoming flow, the difference between this one & most of the other bilge pumps is that this one has an air line attached too, that way you can pump air or pure oxygen with it, $89 inc shipping, best price i found on this style, but after extensive & headaching research my money on this one, if the whole idea is to get as much oxygen to the roots as poss then this surely got to help, i'll be ordering one in next week or 2 then the real testing begins

ok flo, i did some more research, after a few bowls & i found all the parts seperatly for the one in pic i posted for $44.48 with shipping, pay more than that for a good air pump..lol
