CFL Man falls into HPS Nirvana!!

I know I current have a thread talking about my CFL experiment, and yes my plants are doing great. However.......

I was at Lowes tonight looking for a couple of CFLs to put under the canopy when I discovered a large discount table in lighting. I just bought 5 new HPS lights. All of you HPS experts, please let me know how I did.

Qty 3 150w HPS yard light. Full encloser. Just wire and go.

Qty 2 70w HPS wall light. Full encloser. Again, just wire and go.

I bought each for $10 a piece. So, all 5 lights for $50!!!! Just tested one of each.... Wow!!! huge amount of light, and from what I can tell with these enclosures, the 70w produce no more heat than my 42w CFLs!! I didn't leave the 150w on very long as it is in an open room and I do not want to draw to much attention during evening hours.

Thoughts????

Now I just need to learn how to use them without burning the aprtment complex down, or even worse, cooking my plants.

Nope!!! No worries Godkas. I am still 100% CFL with the current grow. I have to see it through this grow and see how it turn out. I bought 4 55w CFLs too. :) I do no think my boxes will support the heat in either case. They will be for the next box, which I am allready planning.

I do too and I am not sure when I am going to use them, but I just could not turn down 60,000 lumens for $50.

Oh believe me I wouldnt either. Id just have to build a radiator to blow refrigerated air into my grow room. That is IF I had $50

great deal..
have you set them up yet? Im just wondering how you are using them..

I started cfls but am thinking about either getting a couple 75 watters from HD, or getting a 400watt balast, with reflector, hps + mh conversion bulbs for about $130 on eBay.. wanted to get the 250 watt system like that but its only like $5 less.. lol, almost make me get the 400watt one even though im trying to use little energy as possible

Get a switchable ballast. Forget expensive conversion bulbs. Switchables let you flip a switch and change bulbs. That is it. Available in 220 volt or 110 volt.

SO, the ligts are not actually on?

I am very curious how your temp will be effected... a 70watt HPS gives off a lot more heat than a 42 watt CFL... a cfl can be kept in an enclosed area without killing the plants.... pretty much any HPS will need an open area or some fan/exhaust.. even a 70 watt hps..

great deal on the lights and please keep us posted :)
