That's the thing. I don't live in a city. My property leads down to the river and on the other side is the Navajo Nation. That's where the gunfire was coming from.

I live out in the sticks. When I say neighborhood I mean the general five mile area around my property.
Everyone is calling everyone else and calling me and I'm calling them. We're all a little bugged out right now.

Navajos aren't like that. It's a matriarchal society. The clans are descended from the women and they usually own the land and the livestock. They operate under the admonition that everything you do reflects on your entire family and clan. They are modest folk and mind their own business and want us to do the same.
The only negative about Navajo society are their skinwalkers.

The simplest explanation would be a Navajo werewolf. But it's a lot more complicated than that. They are very evil and are extremely dangerous. They wear the skins of animals (usually nocturnal) and are said to take on the best attributes of that animal and still maintain human intelligence. I don't know if all that is true but people do follow that ancient tradition. It is said to become a Skinwalker you have to kill a loved one a helpless infant or a holy man (what white folks call a medicine man).
I've seen them on several occasions and they are scary as hell. They normally don't bother anyone outside their tribe. But if you piss one off.... look out.
My signature has the navajo word for them. Naagloshi. They always have glowing red eyes.

They used to be messengers of the Holy People. The ones that walk the rainbow. They were gifted with the ability to shapeshift and run very fast. When it came time for the Holy People to leave they asked for the gifts back (as agreed in the beginning). Most of them did. Some ran off. That's why to this day Navajos view selfishness as a skinwalker trait. They used to hunt them down and kill them.
