Leaves pointing upwards???

I've a mate doing a small grow with autos, he has them under a 400w MH lamp and on all four of the plants the leaves are pointing upwards, there near vertical lol! He has the light just about 6 or 8 inches above the plants and they are growing in soil any ideas what this could be...I've never seen it before

This is what im guessing because he used the term 'nearly vertical'. If it were....

then i would bet he would have used the classic 'taco' description. So unless you want to change your description, sounds to me like they have plenty of water and plenty of light, and are thrilled about it =D

Never heard of the "taco" description, to me they don't look right, he's been feeding them on bio grow, there autos and about three weeks old, maybe he should start giving them bio bloom???

"Taco" description refers to the cupping that occurs to deny transpiration from the leaves. Other than that I literally have no fucking clue, why I haven't run into situations where knowledge of this sort of nutrient-related stuff comes into use, I really do not know. Maybe it's because I'm a hydro guy.

I have three that fit the above description in a room
together. No reason to suspect major deficiencies as using
Autopots and coco/superthrive. Dif strains too.
My light is too close though trying to compromise for a shorter
plant or two(14-16" maybe.
Gone a bit leathery too.
Bet light too close like mine.

Could very well mean the lights are too close....6-8 inches. Should be more like 16-18 inches minimum for a 400........

Am i missing something? if the leaves look healthy and are just pointing up along with the leaf stem then you just have them trying to catch as much light as possible. if it looks like an upsidedown eagles claw then you got issues.

What kind of light are you using? If it's an HID giving it some distance should not be a problem. Compare residual temps to radiant temps. I'm hoping you're in veg?

Actually just the opposite. They are reducing the surface area exposed to the light. Telling him to back it off a bit....

Would like to see about the light distance... I keep my 1000w 18-20" but they're Indica heavy plants and dont seem to mind

This is actually incorrect. The plant can't 'tell a light to back off' nor would it ever have evolved the ability to do so. If it has too much light, instead of 'asking' for less, it will do one of a couple things.

1. Transpire at a higher rate if it can support it (i.e. has enough water).
2. Slow its transpiration rate if it cant (image below is a taco leaf. This can be either what they call 'praying for mag' OR an attempt to slow its transpiration).
3. Bleaching. Your leaves will start to bleach out from too much light (although ive seen this very rarely, almost all cases ive seen in the past was actually another deficiency misdiagnosed).

So, if its getting the leaf shape that is showing in the image below, then you could have a deficiency of magnesium. OR, its slowing its transpiration, which would mean you COULD move the light farther away, or you could just cool your growing environment (i like my lights close. If you can just get it cooler, that will probably be the better choice).

Thanks for response, I'm in pretty late flower on the big ones.
It's a 600 so is a bit close.
Leathery as I put it refers to a thickening of the leaves around the
top of the cola.
not very dry or burnt but wouldn't like to be much closer.
I'll back it off some tomorrow, straggler catching up now
anyway.
Thanks again, was just that taco rang a bell. Flytrap like
could describe it too. Eagle claw a good one as well. Is it heat?

Had a cfl blow and had to flip two plants at like 4"
or so. Still made a bushy 20" plus(nycd) though and seem to
be flowering nicely now despite early onset of flowering.
Learning point for me maybe

I'm afraid the temps thing went over my head a bit, got mid
80s at the colas with a fan on. I struggle to get lower except
in winter.

Sorry missed a couple of replies. Having read them I have backed the light off and pointed my fan toward it.
I'll mist them before bedtime a little and see if it helps.
Two worst are within a week or so of chop so should be ok.
Would like to avoid it again though.
Wish I was able to attach pics at this point.
Im almost sure it's an over abundance of light/heat due to my own mistake.
