is it possible to use a 600 in a 400?

Yes but it won't be as bright as a 400w bulb in the same setup and you'd have a much higher risk of failure. It's essentially trying to use an HPS with a dimmer.

No.

Lower wattage than normal can be done because H.I.D. bulbs are designed to slowly warm up- that's what the ballast is for. So, a 600w lamp goes through a phase where it uses 400w as it's turning on. What you were suggesting just asks it do something for a long period that it's already designed to do for a very short period.

A given wattage bulb was never designed to handle more than it's rating for any length of time. Feeding a 600w bulb a thousand watts would at least burn it out, if not causing it to explode.

ok so safe to say you need the ballast the same wattage as the bulbs which leaves me screwed cause i have 2 600w hps bulbs and the cheapest 600w ballast is like 300 dollars

Just buy a new system.
Are them 600w bulbs brand new?

I wouldnt decided on a system JUST because I have some bulbs laying around. They are they cheapest out of everything you will need to get started.

I would say if you want a 1000w system, Get on the local classifieds for your area, look for a used system or even a wholesale new one. They are not that expensive anymore. I just got a digi ballast for under 250 on a 600w system. This came with a aircooled hood, bulb, ballast, chains, timer.
Off ebay thou, with free shipping. Think it was like 230....

Then if them bulbs are good grow bulbs and are brand new, sell em on the same classifieds that you used to find a 1000w system.
