jasmine is great for smell-covering, you can trellis it around high traffic areas and stuff too; ditto honeysuckle although not as strong.
for early spring, mock orange bushes are great. they have that hopsy tinge underneath all that sweet smell so the other smell just blends into it (i have a wee one in a 6gal pot and that's all my neighbour can smell at her front door when it's doing it's thang).
lilies are good for later in the season. i have a double oriental lady that i had to move several feet away from my front door because it was making our eyes water whilst getting out keys (there's a pic of her in my garden thread; she's the light pink one.)
i have an 18 pack of after 8s (they're like mini stargazers) - i still don't know where i'm going to put them all; certainly can't put them all in the same spot..... can you die from hay fever? ;)

the lemon verbena flowers smelled like something out of this world, too, completely different from what the leaves smell like. i haven't been able to find any seeds, but i'm getting a bunch of them when i go to my big plant sale next week.

Yeah, I'm just starting with simple stuff I know has a smell to it. Basil, and such. Also a few flowers, Moon something, they're moon blooming flowers, so they should carry a little scent at night, while the others do during the day.
But Rosemary, Lavander, Moon Onions, (or any onions), Garlic, ect, ect...are all great for covering smell with their own. My only problem is that I can't decide if I should plant them directly inside near the window, and door in my grow room? Or should I put them outside, right out front and by the window on the outside?
I just don't want to risk the flowers attracting aphids and infecting my babies, they're going into flower tonight and I wouldn't want to jeopardize their buds for anything :-P

just fyi, bloom fragrance blows foliar fragrance out the water with one nostril tied behind its back, cannabis or otherwise. i've had everything in my gardens except the moon onions and moon flowers you mentioned (did you mean evening primrose, perhaps? it's a night bloomer... doesn't really smell too strong tho).... if i had smell issues, would they have helped? <-tbh, not really.
think of how little vegging plants smell - if you reversed the situ, do you think you could mask the smell of a flowering basil plant with the foliar scent from a veg bud plant? (considering flowering basil doesn't smell much stronger than veg basil?) ... probably not, although just *having it there helps with the heatiness a *little ('oh that funny smell? do you see my herb plot?') ;) keep in mind that not all curious parties are gonna bother asking questions....

you want your smell-covering plants as close to wherever you think strangers/outsiders may show up (like next to your front door), also somewhere near your vent (if you exhaust). smell-wise, i wouldn't bother putting any of them *in your room. instead of fighting it, it'll just co-mingle with the bud smell work against you, if anything. and, like you said, it's just an invite for pathogens.

Oh trust me, i'm not trying to cover it with these...that's just ridiculous. It's was just a thought, i'll most likely have a DIY Carbon filter as well.
Thanks so much tho for the info, since I hadn't thought of it in those terms. :-D
To be honest though, i've really just discovered that I have a decent green thumb, and decided to try my hand at other plants. Since I discovered an interest in overall gardening, botany, and horticulture.

Theres some great ideas there, and while they may not work completley on their own, it all helps right :)

*pfft*
this coming from the chick who used to mask the smell of my downtown apt grow by *smoking enough weed to cover the *live smell, lmao right? (what? i lived in vancouver. the entire complex always reeked like weed smoke even before i moved in. ;))

[serious tone]
to any newbs reading this thread, this obviously isn't a quick fix for much more than the odd "waft" and you'll want a more realistic, longterm approach [/serious tone]

The fruit trees are planted, and I love them.

IMG_0233.jpgIMG_0232.jpgIMG_0231.jpgIMG_0267.jpgIMG_0247.jpgIMG_0240.jpgOk its not wednsday, but there a few new things happening I wanted to share, as you can see infront of the 3 verandah poles I have just planted a sunflower infront of each.
Ialso dug a massive hole and filled it in with a beautifull mix of organic soil, compost, blood and bone and a touch of potash and have planted a golden nuget pumkin in it.
I also bought 3 massive black pots and filled with the same mix, they have tomatoes in them, and you can only see 1 styrafoam box in the photo, but I have 2 of those, and they have either brocoli, cauliflower, or cabbage lol. I didn't label the seeds as I planted them, so they are my surprise boxes;-)
After all this digging and planting im buggered, the watermelon hole might have to wait a couple of day.
Oh and the empty pots are filled with seeds, 1 has marigolds, another lavender, another sage, and forget me not. So hopefully they will be brimming with beautifull flowers, and herbs soon enough.

This is an experimental garden on top of the chicken pen, lol. Sounds weird im sure, however for years all these little leaves have been building up composting up there, and we noticed a range of plants that popped up there and were growing well, and when pulled up had great roots growing in there, and it was so moist and luscious.
So my brother being the mad guy he is jumped up and bunched it all into big mounds, and now there is a range of things planted up there, we have 1 strawberry, 2 tomatoes, few basils, 1 zuchini, carrots sunflowers and either a chilli or capsicum plant.
This really is just an experiment, but I have a feeling a few things will do well up there, lets wait and see what happens

IMG_0243.jpg
Oh and this is my neighbours 2 roosters, who have decided to make themselves at home, been here nearly a week, we cant catch them, but I want them gone.
2 of my chooks have now gone broody again, one sniff of a rooster and they need to have babies lol.
I ususally can break them out of it, but they were fully attacking me yesterday because they didn't want me to take their eggs
I have 2 pens though, so I have set up the 2 girls in the other pen, and will allow them 4 eggs each, so in 21 days there may be some little chickies running around :) I know its not garden related but wanted to share it anyway.

Oh and bad news on the gold zuchini seedlings, they had what looked like powder mildew, so I mixed up baking soda oil and water, but got the quantities wrong, and when the sun hit them they got fried :( never mind I will get some new ones and start again, lesson learned!
And everything else is doing really well.

great update.

i like you planting on top of the chicken coop idea. we have a shed that has stuff like that all over it and every year cherry seeds sprout in spring from the tree above it and then die do to lack of water, maybe this year i will keep it moist up theri.

and kinda like your idea, i had one of my own. i was cleaning my gutters and realized they were full of decomposing leaf, pine needles, dirt ect.... and thought a plant would love that stuff and on top of a house no less where it gets sun all day. i want to plant one i nmy gutter for the summer. i think i will put a tomato up theri.

and hey since you got chickens you have free access to some of the best manure for plants. send me some chicken poo.

Well this is the garden bed, there has been a few small changes, I have now put a sweet potatoe in there.
The baby tomatoes brocoli cauliflower, are all coming along very slowly. The corn is doing very well, and the passionfruit has really good new growth.
Im surprised I have anything growing at all, it just wont stop raining here, we already had very bad floods a few months back, and the rain just keeps persisting. Aparantly it is the el nina weather system, and is supposed to die off in winter, so fingers crossed.
There is also some carrots in there, and only a few buk choy left, they keep getting attacked.
SDC11200.jpg
This poystyrene tub at the end of the garden has 2 cauli, or cabbage.

SDC11221.jpgSDC11220.jpg
These tomatoes are coming along good, except the middle one which was ripped out by one of the kids :(, but I have stuck a new sweet potato stub in there, as I have had such good luck with them, and they cost $4.99 per kilo so I'll use all I can grow.
And in the 2 polystyrene tubs next to the toms, I have sweet potato and carrots in 1, and what I think is brocoli in the other.

SDC11210.jpg
These tubs have, sunflower in the middle, and I think brocoli and cauli on outsides, my hubby can get lots of these buckets for me, so I will start planting things up in them as I get them.

SDC11196.jpg
These are the pots I planted, marigold, lavender, forget me not, and sage, and every single seed has sprouted :) so im happy, and the black pot the has I think a cauliflower, or maybe cabbage lol.

SDC11219.jpg
The fruit trees are coming along nicely, and looking good.

SDC11215.jpg
My slow moving herb garden, now all the basil is standing up on its own, and doing better.

SDC11207.jpgSDC11206.jpg
Tgis is the sweet potato, and potato stacks out the back, and both are doing great.

SDC11201.jpgSDC11202.jpg
I have dug out 2 massive holes here, and filled in with a nice soil mix, which has all the goodness in it, 1 is for the golden nuget pumkin, and the other for watermelon, I had a watermelon seed in the empty hole, and it died after trtansplant, I have since read you should plant the seed where you want to grow it, so there is 2 new seeds in there.

SDC11241.jpgSDC11239.jpg
This is the garden on the chicken coop, its not a clear pic for the plants, which are all going well so far, but I love the sunset.

SDC11211.jpg
This is to show how well the passionfruit on the stairs has come back, its looking really good

Wow very nice update. Looks very good. We just got water meters installed into this area and now I'm starting to think of a way to collect rain water and to make a purifier for it.

looking really good.
i have a question though. aren't you supposed to cover the potato with more dirt once it comes up a lil bit like tiers of dirt. that is just what i read so i was curious

You don't have to but you won't get as high yield compared to if you cover it with dirt to make it grow taller.

Yeah, I will probly add the next tier today or tomorrow, it was just a little bit tall for the plant still, so I would have had nothing out the top, but it should be ok now, infact I should go and do it right now. :)
