Opinions on Alcohol

What does everyone here think of alcohol. Alcohol is very much so a drug, it also is the most widely used drug on the planet. It is the only recreational drug to be sold openly in every grocery store, in countless liquor stores, gas stations, bars, the list goes on.... It seems that alcohol is pretty much always within reach. I just want to open this topic up for discussion as I haven't seen any threads about alcohol, like ever. Anyway to open this topic up for discussion I want to post my personal story with alcohol and my opinions on it.

It's kind of a funny story. A love hate relationship, that is. I was born into a family of drinkers. Pretty much everyone in my family drinks. At family functions everyone's got a drink in hand. Both my parents are alcoholics, they drink every day. I grew up with it, it never seemed odd to me that they drank every day, my childhood innocence couldn't grasp the idea of mind altering substances yet.

When I first started to drink I just drank to experiment, I wanted to know what drunk felt like and I couldn't exactly tell if I liked it, so I decided to convince my dad that I had gotten drunk before but didn't like it. This way he would never suspect me of drinking. And that worked but not for long because I started to like drinking more. As much as beer is an aquired taste, to me drunkeness is an aquired taste as well. I'm 19 now and drink damn near every weekend.

I also want to discuss the effects of alcohol. Some people say its a stimulant then a depressant but I feel like the classification of drugs is skewed in our society. Many people call all illegal drugs narcotics when the true defination of narcotic is any drug that is an opium derivitive. Can alcohol be considered hallucionegenic, probably not, but its worth asking. Personally the thing i hate the most about alcohol is the fact that you cannot drive while your on it. I can smoke weed and drive all day but not when I'm drunk.

What are your thoughts and opinions about alcohol? Do you drink? What do you think about its legal status, acceptance into society, effects (positive and negative)? The fact that people say Drugs and Alcohol because they don't want to come to terms with the fact that they are a drug user. Why do you think it ended up being the drug of choice for so many people, so many that its legal almost everywhere. What do you think about the fact that most parents would rather see their kid drink at a young age than smoke weed? What do you think about alcoholism? In relation to other addictions?

Anyway I just thought i would throw all this out there to open it up for discussion.

That is a lot of questions with answers that would require lots of explanation so I'll start with the personal.

Do I drink? Less than I did a couple months ago. Drink too much, go to a club, next thing you know its 4 hours later and you're in the parking lot. Now I just enjoy the drink, I might get half way down a beer as where I used to be half way down a handle.

Alcohol has more than recreational use, it is just used 99% for that (1% cooking, religion, and medicine.) It has been made for thousands of years and in some cases you have to think, would you rather have the nasty bug water or the nasty beer. The entire reason it is legal is because it has been in society for so long, same as smoking tobacco. Does it have positive effects? Eh, makes people more social but I'm pretty sure the bad out weighs the good in this case. Liver failure, death, raging, stupid ideas, addictive, list goes on. It is the drug of choice for so many people because 1. they don't consider it a drug, more of a condiment 2. Its available, all you need is a friend or a blind clerk.

As far as underage drinking/smoking in the parents eyes, smoking is illegal (totally) therefore seen as worse while alchohol is something they probably participate in so it is more of the child disobeying the parent than the law. It's how society is structured and probably won't change for a very long time if ever.

Alcoholism and other addictions I'll leave to someone else.

My opinions on alcohol, it tastes quite nice and you don`t have to score it off a dealer :)

Its around because it has been around so long, like NollingRolling said.

My dad used to get me to sing national anthems and eat cooked snails then give me brandy from age 7 onwards, that was completely normal and still is.

Its also around as its an easy going thing with a nice taste, so people are as far away from the idea of intoxication as possible, yumm red wine with steak type shit...

And finally, alcohol will be around for a long time because of how society is structured, but so will loads of other bullshit things...

Personal comment; I would have a J over booze anyday :D

Well with a name like this, do I really need to answer?

Homebrew has some additional health benefits as it contains more yeast than commercial beer. Beer saved the World after all.

Hahaha your the guy for this topic :)

Not saying alcohols shit, I would like to see anyone say that smoke a J without.... beer and peanuts!! :)

Drinking a GOLIATH - Ruby bitter now. Its slogan is The Beer to slay a mighty thirst!

But seriously, people can`t handle booze just like other drugs, its just ironic that booze is legal... And just tells me the law is shit and that I should stick to what I know best :)

The way I see it, all drugs are more or less aimed at one or two particular feelings. Some sort of euphoria or some sort of insight. The issue is how on the mark that drug is, do the side effects of that particular drug distract from the mark? How wide is the sweet spot? What does just a little bit too much do and is a small dose adequate for some things. Does the drug enhance normal experience?

Given these factors, alcohol sucks. It works well in strictly controlled amounts in social settings, it doesn't last very long, only a very little too much will make you sick and the buzz is pretty much without merit, it is one dimensional and crude.

But beer and scotch and rum taste good.

Ok, I have quaaludes, seconal, valium and rum and coke. You can only have one, which one will you select?

We're a society of gluttons.

Alcohol is a gluttonous substance. Taking LSD, PCP, mescaline (just to name a few) in excess isn't advisable. At least... For most.

Also, to a point, alcohol treats one with kid-gloves. Makes you "forget" your worries. Psychedelics, including marijuana create introspection. We can't have that!

Give the people addictive amnesia juice, deny them thought inducing medicaments, and keep them slaving in the mines without question or rebellion.

Nice read, OP.

Not much of an alcohol person here. Mother was hardcore alcoholic. Kind of turned me off of it. I'll drink every now and again, but probably just once a month or so. I prefer my psychedelics, and occasional xanax =)

When I do drink, it's usually beer socially. Once I drink one, I don't stop till I'm fuuuucked up (that's that alcoholic gene)

of course, since i'm not an alcoholic, i'm a pothead heheh.

Ps: it does kill me how ignorant most people are to the fact that alcohol is a drug. Just like caffiene... it's crazy. and alcohol kills more people and most other drugs combined.

I disagree very much. The poison is in the dose.

Also lets not forget how many unbelievable writers used alcohol regularly, and the working class wouldn't be nearly as 'happy' as they are.

Truthfully there are no things that are advisable in excess, this is why we use therapeutic index numbers so we can assess, based on the minimal dose to yield effects, when toxic or lethal effect may be encountered. The very notion of excess compromises your claims.

And what about the people who aren't gluttons. I use all of my substances wisely. Never enough to encounter unwanted effects, but still enough to enjoy the full experience. In most cases I deal with pure products(except for weed of course) and work my way to the dose so as to not get nausea. Never had a hangover, but last night I shot gunned a tallboy and the foam came right up my throat!!! :spew:

Alcohol just like anything is probably safe if used wisely by a smart person.

I totally agree. I knew a guy that was in and out of rehab over alcohol and other stuff and then he started using incense from a company called T2RSALES and just kicked all his habits virtually overnight.

I think you may have misunderstood my point. Let's say... Alcohol is easier... You can enjoy "large" doses (lets say a six-pack) and be fine. Psychedelics measured in milligram and microgram dosages are much easier to go over the top. The majority of people can't be trusted with such tight tolerances... From the perspective of authorities. And maybe that's a reason for such fears of these substances. How can something so small, so insignificant, be so powerful?

Like I said, I thoroughly enjoy alcohol, and know my limits too. Those limits are easy to judge, really. Especially when only drinking beer. Liqour is a little more difficult, as it takes less.

Education would be key for the use of psychedelics. So why isn't that what's being done? LSD is safer than aspirin. Once again I believe people are afraid of their minds. Afraid of internal reflection. Internal reflection from alcohol only seems to occur closer to "overdose" situations.

Back to gluttony. I don't mean to a point of true excess. Puking, blacking out, passing out, etc. I just mean you are able to enjoy several drinks and have no ill affects. Have several drinks of shroom tea and you could be in for the ride of your life. People like to drink a lot, eat a lot...

Am I making any sense? Or do I need another beer?
