i got some old seeds 1975 ish lots of them my friend used to de-seed into a shoebox in the late 70's and still had tons left over i tried to germinate some out of about 50 seeds i got 4 to sprout but they hermed.

are there any tricks to encouraging germination?

are there anyways to not end up with all herms or is this genetics?

I have about 300 seeds left and would love to get something out of them
just to see it's like a time capsule what did they smoke 30 years ago.

You should definitely use a scuff box(matchbox with sand paper in it that you shake with seeds in.) or lightly sand/scalpel the seam of the seeds..
This will make it easier for the seed to split its shell, as its most probaly lost alot of its vigor in all this time. it will also help water absorbtion into the seeds to start the germing process.
Also a drop or two of super thrive in the water(if youre pre-soaking) or in the water you use for paper towel method, has been said to help germination with difficult or old seeds.
Also be patient, i doubt these are gonna pop very quickly, could take a week plus to get some of them to crack their shells and start with the taproot growth.
Also try different temps for the germing..I find seeds from different regions will pop at certain temps but not others..try a variety of different locations with varying warmth from 21*C - 29*C....seriously this can help difficult seeds.

Well i def think you'll get straight male n female plants out of that many seeds...
If i remember correctly(feel free to correct me) seeds arent actually hermie, hermie seeds just means plants that will possibly hermie with very little or no stress....
Maybe its just one of those difficult to grow strains, that hermie if it dislikes ANYTHING from the humidity/light or the color of the socks you wear in the growspace..

I'm sure the genetics were good in their day and probably now too..i doubt anyone would have harvested seed if it was a shit smoke, and if they knew it was going to mean hermie-prone offspring....

i hope you get some nice genes....Enjoy :)

i know really old seeds will be less likely to germinate, fesher seeds work best between 3 months and 4 years old

And if you do get an hermaphrodite (not that common) let it set seed. the offspring will be as likely Female as not.

I think it's a roll of the dice. You could get something special.

For any seed from a normal, healthy genetic line "the offspring will be as likely female as not." Generally a plant will be either male or female.

Do not breed a hermie, unless you want to suffer through future generations of hermies. Once you have a plant show hermie all of the sudden in the 4th week of flowering, you will know what an evil plague a hermying tendency is in a genetic line. These lines should be brought to a dead end out of principle.

Feminized seeds are a different situation altogether. They are not made just by breeding any old hermie, much less with itself.
