Two Very Bad Bills In Michigan

Just got this from MPP:

Michigan voters made it clear that they support medical marijuana when they overwhelmingly passed the 2008 initiative that was spearheaded by MPP’s campaign committee. But since then, legislators in Lansing have proposed several bills that would undermine that law. Two recently introduced bills stand out as examples.

A keystone of the Michigan medical marijuana law is patient privacy, but last week Senator Darwin Booher introduced SB 377, which would require the names of cardholders to be sent to the Department of State Police and delete privacy protections. The law already allows police to verify patients’ ID cards, so this bill needlessly jeopardizes privacy and treats them like criminal suspects.

Equally outrageously, yesterday Representative George Darany introduced HB 4661, which would make it a felony to cultivate marijuana within 500 feet of a school, daycare center, or church. Rep. Darany says his intent is to prohibit “marijuana clinics” from being located next to these establishments, but as written, the bill would apply to patients or their caregivers, even if they are growing in their own homes!

Please send your legislators an email reminding them Michigan voters have spoken, and patients and their caregivers are not criminals. It’ll take you less than a minute.

Sucks they are not gonna stop till they know all the peeps names that registered. That's why I for one did and will not put my name on some dumb ass list. If you go to the doc get a script for meds from big pharm. your name dose not go on a list you can walk down the street high as a kite. But if you wanna use cannabis for your pain management you need some dumb ass card from the state...Insanity I tell ya !

Get up stand up.. Call these senators reps who ever rattle there cage a bit I know I will be...

do you guys think this will pass? If so, do you think its wise to quit growing? If were completly with in the confines of the law, will you take the chance if they have your information?

They are trying to pass regulations in my area.

All grows must be inspected by Building, Fire, electrical at a $50 fee per inspection.
No growers with in 1500 feet of another, and you will be sited for every day your grow does not pass inspection.
That's in addition to similar laws to the ones you have posted..

The Clinics/Dispensaries are being treated the same as a bar/ tavern/ liquor store rather then like a pharmacy.
It's an effort to get voters to view them as a negative or sinful activity rather then a medical facility.

The best we can hope for is that they latch on to the "sinful" part of that statement. That gives us inroads into getting MJ fully legalized because if it's just "sinful", the so called "sin taxes" will slowly look more and more attractive to the people that don't want us to have it. Especially the people pushing for fixing all the damn budged problems that the federal govt is supposed to have.

I had a real electrician come and watch me run a new section of wire to my room.
I welcome to cops and have entertained the idea of calling one that I know and say, "Here I am, legal and within the law, Dont bust down my door."

Sounds like two decent laws to me.. could be worse.

People crying about police busting them or raiding their homes are people who are loud mouth ignorant people or piss someone off that you let know you grow. Grow, enjoy keep your mouth shut and the law will be safer. Its the idiots who think getting a fucking card is a ticket to dealing bud on the street or too non card holders. It's BS ya, but those are the mother @!)(*&@! that are going to get our laws amended or even taken away.

I think both laws are awful. SB377 takes away my medical privacy and worse, opens me up to harassment. HB4661, if this was about keeping clubs and dispensaries away from schools that's one thing, but it isn't. It's telling people if they live by a day care or school they can't grow in their basement, what purpose does that serve? The church bothers me the most, why does a church get special consideration?

For once, Buddy and I agree. We're not talking about street weed, this is medicine. What are they gonna do next? Tell me I can't take a pain pill within 50 feet of a fire hydrant?

TPTB (The powers that be) are trying to make it so there is a serious amount of red tape to wade through just to be able to medicate yourself and provide medication for those in need. The way they are thinking is that if they put you on a list, it will deter many from even considering becoming card holders. All the hoops that one might have to jump through may scare some away. With that said, I disagree with the new bills being floated around. The voters have spoken in 2008..........

I dont have a problem with this. I do have a problem with growing in your own home if it is within 500ft.
Why should I be denied my right to grow my medicine simply because I live within 500ft of a school or daycare center? I could understand not allowing it on the property, but within 500ft? Fuck you, thats MY land. And I don't understand how a church is even in the bill. I can understand why a church would want it, but churches are inherently insane and shouldn't have a say in ANYTHING. I can't believe churches are actually listed in the bill.

I also don't understand the first bill. It's like they are trying to fix something that wasn't broken. You have a suspect in custody that produces a card and a patient number, they call and verify. This bill is completely unnecessary.

WITHIN 48 HOURS AFTER
ISSUING A REGISTRY IDENTIFICATION CARD, THE DEPARTMENT SHALL
FORWARD INFORMATION CONCERNING ISSUANCE OF THE CARD TO THE
DEPARTMENT OF STATE POLICE. THE DEPARTMENT OF STATE POLICE SHALL
MAKE THE INFORMATION CONCERNING REGISTRY IDENTIFICATION CARDS
AVAILABLE TO STATE AND LOCAL POLICE OFFICERS IN A FORM THAT ALLOWS
IMMEDIATE ACCESS TO INFORMATION NECESSARY TO DETERMINE WHETHER AN
INDIVIDUAL IN CUSTODY FOR POSSESSION OR DISTRIBUTION OF MARIHUANA
POSSESSION IS A QUALIFYING PATIENT OR PRIMARY CAREGIVER.

Guy,

Don't they give us that same option on our application ?
I check it on mine and request that a my patients do the same.
It prevents asshole cops from playing the "how do I know it's a real card" game..

No. What my application states is: "By checking this box, I additionally authorize the release of my name and date of birth to law enforcement, to confirm my identity, only if law enforcement has provided the michigan medical marihuana program with my valid registration number"

So only if and when you are apprehended by police, and provide your valid car, and they call the mmmp with your id number do they get that information.
