Many places sell live 'peyote'. But be sure which species of Lophophora you are purchasing. Diffusa is often passed off as the fabled Williamsii, which has zero to very minute amounts of mescaline, if that's what you seek, brother. Maybe you're just looking for a new friend?
They are great companions.As for potency and age.. depends on the environment and how the cactus was grown. A younger cactus grown free in the wild will have a higher concentration than one much older that has been greenhouse or indoor grown.
My advice to you, if mesc is what you seek, track down some Pedro or Bridgesii. Absolutely gorgeous. But if peyote is truly what you need, seek out greenhouse grown ones and please do not disturb the 'Wild Things'. They are a deteriorating luxury in the deserts.
One last thing, my friend: Peyote is not a trip, but an experience.

I really enjoy growing (just weed so far), i feel a connection to these special plants, so i would like to give it a go at something else such as cacti and someday in the future ask them some questions but i am not in a hurry. I did try some san pedro last summer, i boiled a 3 foot cactus for 3 hours around divided most with 3 friends..nothing really happened was kind of a disappointment since it tasted so horrible and was the worst thing i ever drank..not really the taste but the texture of it going down. But it did have some mescaline because the next day i woke up really well and happy, was really strange since i never wake up that well rested.
So true, thank you for the correction i also see all psychadelics as lessons, knowlege and experiences rather than just tripping as if it was intended for just fun..its so much more than that but i guess most people go into it with the wrong state of mind.

Oh yess, the putrid sloppy green brew of phlegm.. I know of what you speak lol The one and only time I've tead fresh cactus I used four feet of SP.. One of the most magical days of my life, truthfully. Sounds far out, but true! Give it another go sometime. It's a powerful teacher.

Peyote grown under the low stresses of home gardening will never produce the effects of the wild harvested thing.
Being seriously endangered in the wild, there is no reason for any but the real traditional users to have access.
You can get your mescaline kick easily from san pedro and Peruvian torches and hybrids of the two (most fall in the latter category).
Get a cutting or log from someone, cut it in slices about 3 spines high, place them on dry sandy soil, and try to pick them up once a month, until they grow roots that start to grab at the sand below.
Then start watering lightly, they can grow really fast in well-fertilised soil. They originated in forests, not the deserts where they are one of the last survivor species.
You can grow a golfball sized yote in a year by grafting it.
