Round Three - 10 Pound Minimum Outdoor 2011

Welcome ladies and gents.
Just to introduce myself I have been growing indoor and outdoor for the last 3 years and I havent had much success with the outdoor part for the past 2 summers but this year im shooting for the stars.
I have started with one spot between soy fields in a low thorn bush area. Hiked with 2 bundles of Bergers BM1 peat moss pro (70 pounds) .75kms from the road across a field to the destination. I grew some auto flowering plants in this same location and never visited them until harvest and got about 10 grams, yes very disappointing.
This year im going all out so I dug huge 2 feet wide and 2 feet deep holes about 6 gallons of soil each and added the 120L bag of soil divided by each 10 holes. The 2 strains I currently have out are bag seed from my friends grow from last year. He didnt take out the males until late so some of his buds got really nice seeds. I also ordered from BC Seed King 15 mango seeds, I sent 50 cash and in less than 10 business days I got 20 seeds from them. I was first very skeptical about the reviews I have read but the seeds I got looked the best that ive ever bought... even better than my friends outdoor from last year. So currently I am germinating 5 and I will see how they do.
I also have the 2 plants that I started in my last grow and they have been vegging for about 3 months and I already know both are females. The first time I went out to plant them was May 5th and thats when I hiked in with the bails of BM1 which is very very heavy. The next time I visited the plot then one was dug up by a deer. I put out more plants and found that I have a problem with slugs so I got copper wire from my jobsite and coiled it around the stems of my plants to keep them away.

Man, I gotta hand to you guys that tote soil in to a grow area, and all that, sheesh that's alot of work. I can grow legally, and it makes alot easier, but it's still alot of work. If my lazy ass had to tote my soil in by hand, I prooly wouldn't even try it! Good luck bro, I'm puuling for ya! +rep!

subd , ... good luck . looks like your off to a real good start - I say good luck but good fortune has a way of favoring those who work for it .. I dont think your gonna need much luck

Looking good soo far. im hoping for 10lbs myself. I have 20 on the go right now. one is a 3 foot (squared) bonsai mother from last year, ill probably pull one and a half pound off her alone. :p

i can second the hard work thing. carying dirt dosnt seem that bad at first. that changes after you get about 30 yards into a mile long hike...

I found a second spot that is about 5 minute drive from the other plot. I have to cross a sketchy ass fallen over log to get to this one. I went to check on the spot last week and because of all the rain I couldnt cross so I had to wait a few days, this is the only crossing for a kilometer. I prepared 5 holes and will be transplanting about 10 to that area sometime this week. Both locations are very close to a stream or river so I will have no problem watering my ladies.

I hope to be visiting each location every other week so I should have an update with pictures for you to enjoy weekly. Stay tuned

My Item List: (Mandatory for every guerrilla grower!)


  • Bug Spray - Damn mosquitoes!
  • Tarp - Mixing soil and when digging out soil you dont make a mess everywhere.
  • Tree Saw - I only cut key branches on trees that block sunlight but you should always find a clearing where you dont need to cut down whole trees.
  • Full Size Shovel - If you want a big yield the roots need big holes, I dig 1.5 foot diameter and 1.5 feet deep holes around 5 gallons of soil.
  • Peat Moss - You want to usually add some additive to your soil to increase drainage and hold moisture. You can also use Manuer, Perlite, Worm Castings.. or combinations of all. Something like Berger's BM1 or Pro-Mix BX contain Perlite and Peat Moss and a bunch of other ingredients.
  • Bucket - For watering your plants, or an empty large drum to hold water. Paint them black.
  • Plant Food - To add to your water. Use Molasses 1tbsp per gallon during flowering for extra carbs to your plants and larger bud growth.
  • For Animals: Chicken Wire, some people may not have any deer or animal problems where they grow. I also use cut up bars of Soap and Dog Hair to keep animals away.
  • For Snails and Slugs: Copper Wire or Slug B Gone or similar product that is not harmful for wildlife.
  • The stuff that you should already know to bring: Drinking water, Sunscreen/Headlamp (depends what time of the day you go out to your plot), remember you will be out in the bush for at least 2 hours at a time for digging/watering/planting/setting up.
  • Clones/Seedlings of course!

I think I got everything there, I may have to edit this at some point to add more things.
Anybody got anything else they want to add to the list?

Update Plot 1:

All plants are about 10 inches tall except one that is barely alive. Ive transplanted all the plants to separate holes and added one mango to the bunch. I also fed all the plants with half strength Parkwood All Purpose 20-20-20 plant food. I am attempting to clone my one

Good work my friend. I totally understand what toting stuff in is like. The upside is that you will develop some muscles. I've been toting two five gallon buckets at a time since April, got to say it's buffed me up.

Since my plants are big now I have to cart in at least six or seven of those every week and a half or so.

Subbed. i know exactly what its like to pack stuff into the plot man... i had to pack 4x 105 CU bails of sungro mix #1 4x larga bags of grass clippings and 1 50 LB bag of wood mulch over a 2 KM hike.......

look on the bright side, you'll be ripped like BrownDirtWarrior :) thats what im hoping for haha

theres only one thing im wondering about right now with your grow.... how everyhitng will turn out without aerated soil, i cant see any perlite or anything else did you just put dirt in the holes or did you amend the soil?

i watched your last grow and am running 10 hybrid seeds of unknown origin for my current indoor cfl grow. I want to try an outdoor but will wait for next year...so im very excited to watch yours, i hope you blow the lid off that 10lbs goal!!!!

That second spot is killer indeed. Just 1 suggestion, next year research a product called Deer Away, a liquid concentrate that deters smaller rodents as well. It will eliminate the noticeable screen cages you use.

I second the deer away, i used a similiar product called liquid fence in a deer infested area last year and had no troubles whatsoever. The classic animal repellent though is scattering moth balls and chunks of irish spring soap which is what im using this year. Everything looks really good though and all that work will pull you a very nice harvest. Im not sure if this was what you implied but having buckets for rain collection is a wicked smart idea if you arent near a water source.

Couple of things for the list above: Alfalfa meal and kelp meal are excellent things to add to your soil as well as the peat moss, they add a lot of trace elements as well as growth promoting horomones. I also suggest making a nice compost tea to boost soil life, guano tea can be used for a boost during flowering.

On top of the shovel and tree saw, a bush axe or machete is great for clearing brush and a pick axe does wonders for digging up rocks and cutting thick tree roots. Also a pair a work gloves is much loved when dealing with thorns etc.

Finally this is rather obvious but is easily forgotten is a good compass and topographical map of your area, nothing sucks worse than getting lost in the bush. Good luck with the grow i'll be stopping by to check it out

That series BrownDirtWarrior did is amazing, its a lot of hard work.
I believe Bergers BM1 contains peat moss, perlite and canadian sphagnum. I should have probably added in more perlite to the mix but I just dug 5 gallon holes and mixed a couple shovels of dirt and then a few shovels of BM1 until the hole was full. I decided to put no bm1 on the surface of the ground because the snails and slugs would stick around with all the moisture being held in the peat moss.

thats a good idea not to put any on top, thats why i was confused,couldnt see through the top layer :P... the casing layer will also help hold the moisture in teh bottom. just remember to break it up every once in a while to allow for oxygen transfer.
