does under/over watering put alot of stress on plants?

ive got 5x 6 week old plants in a NFT GT setup but theres so many roots and the watertank below is to small for the amount of water the plants need

i go to bed and there looking great then i wake up and theyve took to much water, so when theres less water in the tank the submersible pump doesnt deliver enough water to the tray and the plants are underwatered and floppy as fuck.

so i keep having to top the tank up so the pump stays at the same flow rate, but i no stress causes hermi plants but i dont no how much stress this puts on the plants? seeing as this has happened 3 days inarow now im guessing its going to soon be very stressful to them?

i like the gt unit because its nice and compact but i might put the tray ontop of a 120 litre rubbermaid and get a bigger pump powefull enough to lift the water to the new height of the tray

i kind of didnt make my quesiton clear, i no that light leaks during the 12-12 period is one of the biggest causes of herming the plant, i wanted to no how stressfull under/over watering was in comparison. like will i get away with this happening a few times or is it a major stresser

I have not had watering issues in my systems but am curious as to any experiences with such. People like to say any old stress causes hermies but I'd done a lot of heavy tying stress during flower and have not seen hermies. The only time I've seen one I couldn't explain why it hermied. (It was a bagseed was my only explanation 6 years ago)

I can't think of any controlled studies where someone consciously overwatered or under watered a plant to document stress level variances. It's an interesting idea but I'm not sure if you'll find any relevant info here. Why don't you try a controlled study and document the results and post a thread about it. I know I'll read it with great interest.

well, stress hermies are the plants attempt to procreate when it looks like it's going to die without getting pollenated, so if the drying out/overwatering is as bad as you say it might cause the plant to herm. However, some plants are VERY herm resistant and it might not happen.

However, other plants will herm NO MATTER WHAT because that is a part of their genetic makeup. That bagseed that hermed likely hermed because it was from a herm. Make sense? just like you look kinda like your dad because you inherited some of his traits, the bagseed inherited the hermie trait.

PlantManBee was that directed towards me? What in my statement said I didn't know that basic information? Now re-read it assuming I actually know that. I was just saying I had no way to determine if it was a stress caused or genetic because I don't assume cause based on a single observation. The blanket statement, "it was just bagseed". We can't know genetics were the cause as likely as it probably was, it wasn't a scientific controlled study.

Talk to me condescending again and I'll just block you. Don't answer questions that weren't asked, especially when I didn't allude to being ignorant of facts.

hahahaha! right....the info was asked for and i gave it. but block me if you must...i will be crushed :lol:

Two people giving the same info does not necessarily mean anyone is trying to pick a fight. it's all good. wasn't trying to slight you and besides, NOBODY is born knowing this stuff, so if someone tries to explain it doesn't have to be taken as insulting. ;-) :eyesmoke:

lmao hmmm, well thanks for all the answers i allready understood about hermi plants from hermi seeds but i suppose i will just have to wait and see if they come out allright. there looking really nice at the moment anyway.

i just have to keep my eye on the tank and keep topping it up before i go to sleep

sounds like a plan :eyesmoke: it's always easier to go with what you have than to trash it anyway so...go for it! you'll find out about how much stress those bitches can take! LOL :eyesmoke:

you said they were wilting like a mo fo right? If so adding some silica to their diet will help LOADS! i'm using "silica blast" right now myself, but will probably switch to mostly dyna-gro proteKt as I like the added K for flowering (it's NPK is 0-0-3). Silca helps with rigidity of the cells... basically makes the plants tougher.

PlantManBee, I read it as directed towards me. If not, ignore it and I go extra retarded when sleep deprived *slaps self* been a little extreme as of late so on edge. I don't smoke anymore, there goes my chill pill >.< (Humbly begs to be excused for lapse of judgement. Duration unknown.)

ahh nice everythings good again fellahs

yeah i actually have been using liquid silicon quite often, ive got the problem sorted now i used some plumbing skills to add a float valve and a small tank to top it up automatically, al post pictures tomorrow
