I did a lot of googling to find out exactly what is resin and what to do with it, the most informative posts led me to this site but nothing really clear so i went on a little adventure.
Ive been smoking from this bong and metal pipe about a month now, ive never cleaned them out until today.
Resin is a black tar substance that builds up in your piece over a while thats pretty much just THC. its very sticky and hard to get out. the high yields a short, but great effect so i hear. well found out later today.
How to harvest resin was the part i couldnt quite get my fingers on, nothing that really said blatantly what to do so i just tried some stuff and heres what i came up with;
I took apart my metal pipe with a plastic middle section, and the slider from my bong. i took a small egg pan and filled it with water, set the oven on high and let it boil. once it started simmering i set the pipe and slider in there, the pipe comes apart into about 5 different parts or so which made this a lot easier. i made sure to keep the plastic mid section and the plastic rings out of the boiling water.
as the water boiled for about 4-6 minutes i took a lighter, lit it up, and set the plastic piece STRAIGHT DOWN on the flame so the flame went just inside and only left it burning for a fraction of a second so the plastic didnt melt, then i took a clothes pin and quickly scrapped up the gunk. i tried putting it on paper, this didnt work. dont touch or put this stuff anywhere. try to just flick it off into the water youre boiling the piece(s) in because when its really wet and what not its not as sticky and easy to work with.
by the time i finished scraping it out, the resin pot was ready. i turned it off, and let it cool for about 45 seconds to a minute. at this stage, i pulled out all the seperate pieces and scrapped as much as i could out from inside of them and set it on a metal spoon. the substance is a lot easier to work with after being boiled.
next is the tricky part, empty as much of the water as you can in the sink, make sure youre only dumping pure water and no black/brownish gunk. most of the gunk will sink but some small bits float but they do add up so try not to dump them.
once i got it down to a workable amount of water i simply took a spoon and scrapped it all up and set it on another spoon. you can use some other glass or metal ware, plastic is not recommended as its sticky, i just used a spoon. its easy and effective.
after harvesting all of the gunk, i just separated it out into bowl sized incriments, i got 2 bowls worth approximately. Ill smoke it later today and update with what went down. make sure you let the gunk sit for atleast an hour to evaporate most of the water so you can smoke it!

for those of you looking only to clean your pieces and not harvest the resin ive cleaned pieces with simply rubbing alcohol. i wouldn't recommend doing this and then smoking the stuff though
the still drying resin balls - this spoon is really huge so it doesnt look like it but each one is about a bowls worth.
heres the pan i used - IMPORTANT NOTE - IF YOU USE A TOP TO MAKE IT BOIL FASTER MAKE SURE YOU CHECK THE INSIDE BOTTOM OF THE TOP AND SCRAPE OUT RESIN FROM IT
