I'm a newbie and gather from the many posts that there is a difference between watering and flushing. Can some one explain the difference.

When you flush you are basically adding a shit load of water to your girls so you have major drainage to "flush" out the salt build up in your soil from most chemical nutrients. I've read in books before that you want to flush properly ph'd water, usually 3 times the amount of your container. Example: 5 gallon container, 15 gallons of water. I have done this in the past when using chemical nutes and which is also why i switched up to organic growing. You need not flush. But let me warn you if you flush water 3 times the amount of your container size you best make sure your soil is on the dry side. 3 times is a lot and a pain in the ass! Just make sure you have a lot of drainage if you want to flush.

Not ever having used an over the counter organic nutrient other than Plant Tone, all I can say is I doubt any truly organic nutrients will cause a salt build up in soil. Flushing is geared to removing the salts that build up in the soil when using chemical nutrients. If you buy your organics over the counter, look for "OMRI certified" somewhere on the label. that SHOULD guarantee you for real organics.

OMRI is just an independent (and respected) review board that certifies products and ingredients for such agricultural purposes. Plenty of good organic products don't carry the OMRI seal (it costs money to have a product reviewed) and some are verified by other agencies.
Check ingredients for things like "ammonium nitrate, ammonium phosphate, potassium nitrate, calcium nitrate" or "disodium ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid" or "Calcium EDTA, Iron EDTA, Zinc EDTA", etc. Those are the kinds of things you want to stay away from.

Flushing is when you are growing in soil you take water that is the same amount of volume of soil that is in a pot (ie say your using 5 gallon pot that has 5 gallons of soil in it you use 5 gallons of water)you poor the water slowly and let it sit for 3 to 5 mins then you take the the same amount of water (new) and poor it through slowly again. You can do it 1 more time but if you want to let it sit for 3 mins then do it again but 2 times should be more then enough.
Also if you have a PH pen make sure that you collect the run off and test it for the PH levels and your next batch of water should be PHed up or down depending if the run off is higher or lower.
