Untreated Well Water?

I'm about to move, but the one thing i've been checking everything out to make sure i have the proper grow environment .... most is seeming ok except one thing. It's well water and it isn't being softened. The other tenant in the residence was telling me it's pretty "dirty" and that she doesn't even use it to brush her teeth...
years ago i lived in this same house while it was being renovated and rememberd the water coming out brown, with rust and/or sediment in it.

I'm growing in dirt and am curious.... what steps should i be taking to combat this issue if it is an issue.
obviously i can't drink this water ..... i'm just wondering... do i service the softener. Would a tap filter do the trick if the water is only being used for my plants.
Any help would be appreciated. I'm a city guy moving to the "country"

id get a water filter a semi good one at that. if your running ona well you should have a filter on it before it even hits your house. on the farmi worked on we used well water and to be certifiede we had to have the reverse osmosis to clean it of everything bad

McPurp dropping some knowledge!!! thanks man. I'd figure there's a filter on it but like i said. The upstairs tenant doesn't use the water, i guess expcept to shower, and i haven't really assessed the situation. I'm about to go up there with my ph tester just to see how that's running. A RO filter is quite pricey though no???? obviously it would be worth it but i'm not in a spot to purchase one yet. ....and to Kizz ..
that's what i'll end up doing for sure for the tap.... i've been explaining my problem to other people who don't know i grow and they tell me to get one of those pitchers .... I'm thinking, do you know how long that shit would take to water plants in 4 gallon pots, or god forbid flush...... anyways ..a little ramble for ya. thanks guys.

ps Softened water is very bad for your plants, too much salt.

thanks brotha. I assumed that adding more salt to the water would really fuck things up but ....I don't know anything about well water really. I grew up with it and the only thing i know is is that i makes it feel like your never really clean (softened water i mean).
once again thanks for the link ... i was figuring RO systems ran in the 3-400 dollar range.

also i'm not sure how the water runs .... is an aquarium store a good place to find PPM strips to test this bitch out..... ah i don't know why i'm askikng. I can do the research myself.

do you say that because of the statement i made about the water running rust colored in the past??? It really wouldn't suprise me .... as nice of a place i'm about to move into the landlord couldn't give two shits about anything other than the rent.

Yes.Is it an older home?And i feel ya all to well on the landlord thing.I got one of those landlords myself.

I don't know if this helps, but I found a Culligan water filter station at wal mart. You bring in a 5 gallon jug, fill it and pay $.37 a gallon. It's r/o water too.

5 gl for $1.25 around here out of the machines.I just hate the fact of how much water is wasted in the process of making r/o.I love me well wata.

Well ...... i guess. not as old as some around here but.. it looks like a modular home. It's almost like two houses stacked upon each other... i don't know when they started building em. But either way the well and lines could still be old as shit.

I have a well and septic so is my waste water really wasted? hmmmm I like to believe it all eventually gets back into the ground anyways. heh
