Ahhhh - i think that is where we differ. See i think the sheep would be doing the waterboarding - just being a lion is enough.

also - my main concern is not for terrorist scumbags getting waterboarded. My concern is how long before US citizens are tortured with far more painful and lasting tortures for political or other reasons? It is a slippery slope giving up liberties during wartime. All the founding fathers spoke out against trading security for liberty as being a supremely bad idea. And then as soon as the young nation went to war guess what happened? The alien sedition act which curbed freedom for safeties sake!

Besides, if we aren't able to take the moral high ground we have no business trying to spread our system of morality around. if someone damns us for taking the moral high ground ... fuck them. But if we are no better than some tin-pot dictator then we'll start being deserving of the scorn already heaped on us.

Having said all that, if you believe that capital punishment is a good idea and a useful deterrent to criminal behavior - you will have a hard time defending an anti-torture stance. I mean if you're willing to kill out of revenge -- what is putting the hurt on someone compared to possibly saving lives, right?

another words like most issues, i don't think this one is black and white. I say that cause there are circumstances that i would condone torture - and a lot more painful that waterboarding but that doesn't make it morally right.

ethics and morals can be a tricky business if you want them to be rooted in logic and rationalism.

I am wishy-washy on this issue but my gut reaction is against torture.
