co2 and my familys health

ok so i have been toying with the idea of a co2 controller... i have access to as many full co2 bottles as i want ...so the only cost will be the controller itself ...about $180 ....

but a few years ago i took a bar and cellar managment course...and on that course i was told that a co2 leak is very bad news ... it will without warning make you pass out, and if your not found in time it will kill you ..... so is it too much of a risk to use this gas in my grow room in the attic?..... as if there was ever a problem our bedrooms would be directly below it..

any ansa's on this would be greatfully recived.....

well i do intend to seal my grow tent... by wrapping it with rigid insulation and duct-tape... with a hinged and insulated door...(over the top really, but the fuzzys are hot with the chopper round here)... i just dont know if it it would be enough to make it totally safe

how about a smoke test .. i could let of a smoke bomb in my tent with it shut to see if it leaks much ... but if it does i could end up with the fire brigade and police round the house

I think your thinking of carbon monoxide, co2 is naturally in the atmosphere at around 300 ppm. I have been in my grow rooms for hours with rates of 1500 ppm and never had any adverse reactions.

if you have a family you may be producing plenty of co2 for your grow, I have 11 plants in my bedroom, with only a small amount of room ventilation, so I rely almost entirely on my sleep cycle for co2, and I have 3 plants in 1 gallon pots 3' tall with fist sized colas so you may have plenty already, maybe do some testing first to see what kind of co2 your family produces in a normal day/night

wouldnt the plants be dead by then anyway? i thnk 2000ppm is toxic to them, also you could invest in a few canaries, everythings good till the canary stops singin, haha,

If I shut my burner completely off and get my ppm's down to zero by venting my room, I can get the ppm's up to like 500 ppm's just by breathing in the room while i'm working. NASA uses high amount of co2 as pest control. And I have had it up to 2000 ppm and been in the room without it affecting me. I wouldn't recommend it tho..

lmao right on....but i dont kno much bout co2 but plants do use it and make it into oxygen (i think right?) i think if u searched a little on here u could read up on co2 more but u should find out more like that lol

co2 is indeed hazardous to your health. As a previous poster mentioned, 3000 ppm is the danger zone and 5000 ppm can lead to death. As with all hazardous materials, you can't make it completely safe. You can only manage the risk. Regular maintenance of your canister is the main way to keep leaks minimized. Spray around the nozzle with soapy water and if you see any bubbles forming, you have a leak and need to get it checked out.

I wouldn't be comfortable saying it'd be safe for your family because I don't know the specifics (type of co2 cylinder, where you got it, when it's been inspected and registered, location of grow room, etc) but I will say most leaks take a long time to develop into anything resembling danger levels.

well i was just asking for other growers opinions to be honest.... i wasn't talking about "safe levels-350-1400ppm" which i would be intending to acheve.... and my cylinder is the 3ft std that you would find in bars and clubs... (serviced every 6months generally).... i was more concerned about if my CO2 controller lost control and spunked a full cylinder into my growspace in a very short space of time.... and in other growers opinon would it be best to use it in a location romote from my living quarters

thanks bud now thats the sort of information i was looking for... i will cut and paste this to my note pad .... and maybe save the co2 thing untill i'm growing somewhere other then above my bed.... nice to see that people can give honest ansa's to reasonable questions... rather than just "why ask questions to stoners (no offence)"
