I would imagine just about any contaminate on your hands while working with nutrient or res could be an issue.
The one i hear a lot about is soap or bleach in the res. There are seriously so many story's out there about not fully flushing hydro systems or mediums (hydroton, wool blocks) that it makes me think most people are just winging it when it comes to hydro.
We all know hydro's pros, faster vegging/flowering and better control of nutrient but this really makes it clear; you must use the right equipment and you get what you pay for.
A few years back i needed to pickup a PH meter, I didn't have the 60 bucks it usually costs for a decent one so i got a bargain basement meter. The meter read slowly and maybe i was impatient, but i figured "hey, its close to 5.8, I'm sure its fine" it was not fine... One nutrient locked plant later i was on my way to the local hydro store to get a decent reader.
The phrase "you get what you pay for" has served me very well over the years, from nutrient to equipment and even soil, there is a reason things that look the same but cost very different really are different! Company's pay for research and pass that on to you, so, if 2 grow tents look similar and one of them is double the price, the one that seems like a deal is probably a piece of junk.
Another rule related to that one is "go big or go home". Ok, ok, this does not apply to everything, a 1k light in a 3x3 area is a hassle to say the least, but i know a lot of growers that use multiple "in-line duct fans" they bought at home depot instead of getting a big ol' 500cfm can fan, in-line duct fans are great for semi-passive intakes and they are cheap (15-25 bucks) but the truth about them is that they are really only 70-100 cfm if that so, say you have 4 of them to get 400cfm of air movement plus all that extra ducting to hook them up, you are spending about the same as a standard can fan on ebay with the only plus side being that you didn't have to wait for it to show up in the mail.
Someone post some bud porn! I gtg to work and i expect some serious scrog pics when i get home! lolz!
