Staying legal while maintaining multiple mothers?

So I was just thinking how do people keep mothers while growing 6 plants in flower? I found many threads about bonzai plants. So is that how its done? From my understanding a plant smaller than a cubic foot and not flowering is considered immature?

I think the bonzai thing does not really work that well for mothers, but that is just my opinion. I think, for most people, if you want to keep 2 mothers, you can train your 4 other plants to really widen their canopies and create a nice canopy for one light with just 4 plants. Then you keep your 2 mothers. But honestly, if you only have 6 plants legally, I would only keep one mother.

Are you running more than one light? Because if not, then a one light grow op with a mother should be no problem......as long as you lst them and form a nice, wide canopy.

You are correct. Many growers do the banzai method. Others just take the clone directly off of a "vegetative" plant before moving it into "flowering". This can eliminate the need for the "mother" giving an extra number to the flowering stage.

Maybe I just do not understand what you mean by bonzai, haha. When I was only legal for 6 plants, I did like cptweed is saying, and took a clone off the vegetative plants before they went into flowering. When I got another patient, I started keeping a mother.

It is the art of growing trees and plants, kept small by being grown in a pot and by the use of skilled pruning, formed to create an aesthetic shape and the illusion of age. The Chinese art of penjing is very similar to and is the precursor of the Japanese art of bonsai. haha

You just keep a mother manageable in size allowing you to not have it taking up too much room and not requiring such a large amount of nutrients.

Question on this....how do you get any worthwhile cuttings off something kept so short? Just visualizing a bonzai'd plant under 1 foot in diameter, and I am just thinking the nodes may not be able to develop enough? Just a thought, but you guys have practical knowledge, mine is just theory....haha. Probably just taking super small clones?

I don't intend to do this at this point in time, but I was just curious if this was available as an option to stay legal while maintain genetics that I don't want to lose. Yes I think it would produce smaller clones, but if thats the only option to stay legal then it may be worth it no? I'll find a video about it for you hazo

Absolutely worth it, just trying to wrap my brain around it, that's all. I deal with this challenge myself, since I let my Ice Anomaly mother get wayyyyy too big.....so I am actively looking for ways to improve in the future......hope I am not intruding in the thread....I will try to go do some research also.......I like the discussion though....I am always liking to learn new ways to go about things.

haha... no. You would only have 5 actual flowering plants and you let the "mother" take up one of the numbers. I did not mean a mother shorter then 12 in sorry. Just not 4, 5 feet. "Manageable"

Nope no intrusion here, this is open for discussion. Here is a thread on RIU about it, https://www.rollitup.org/general-marijuana-growing/464741-bonazai-clone-mothers.html I can't find the video I was looking at yesterday.
I literally was JUST LOOKING AT THAT THREAD, and about to post a link...haha. Seriously, it is in my copy file, ready to be pasted......haha. I just subscribed to it, and I think this is going to help me out at just the right time.......My Ice Anomaly is in a huge pot, and I need to prune back the roots, and put it in a smaller pot, or the same pot with some new soil......So glad you got this thread started! Good stuff!

Yes this too is a good option, but some people like to grow multiple strains

Haha, this makes much more sense to me.....I just could not wrap my brain around keeping it under a foot tall AND a foot diameter. Tough to get any good clones, or at least a good number of good clones from that.......overall I think everyone ought to check out the bonzai link if you have not seen something like that already. Very informative.

What are you using as your multiple mothers? And is there any chance of you picking up another patient in need, so you can have more options for mothers?
As I mentioned I am not currently doing this, but I would like to experiment with different strains in the somewhat near future as far as time required to grow a plant! I don't know about you all but I get tired of a certain strain after a bit. As for picking up another patient, I don't have enough experience to do this. There is no way I could promise anything to them.

I don't know what state you are in but read the rules carefully. In California 6 flower or 12 in veg does not mean you can have both.
So like cptweed said the mother and five flowering plants is probably the best way to stay legal. The amount of plants doesn't really matter in regards to yield indoors. Start fewer plants and veg a bit longer, train them and you will get the same amount in the end.

As for the strains I do have at the moment.. Purple Urkle, and 3 Stoney Girl Garden strains which I'm unsure exactly what they are because they came in a variety pack and weren't individually packaged or marked.

Oregon we can have 18 total, but only 6 can be "mature" as per the definition someone posted earlier. which is anything greater than 12inches wide and/or 12 inches tall.
