What do you use and why 24/7 vers 18/6

Well I actually am going to use both (HPS and MH) for this grow in particular. I think thats the best for flowering.
I was teasing you about making the mistake because you maybe were enjoying the fruits of your labor :joint:

I use both MH and HPS through the whole grow. I am happy with the results!

I've seen it.. looks good.

I wonder, have you noticed a difference in using 24/7 lighting as compared to 18/6?

The plants I've had experience with have always seemed to jump up "over-night" on 18/6 lighting schedule.

Having experience with different lighting, I think the 18/6 with fluorescents in the way to start (veg). Then switch to a HPS/MH 1000w (combined) for flowering. The FL's always keep the plants short and bushy, then the shoot up under the HPS.

I've seen the MH make tall, lanky, weak plants before.. soil and hydro. The HPS only makes this worse.

Your advice is eagerly awaited... lol.

i haven't done much experimenting with light cycles so my sample is very small. I've noticed jumps in growth at odd times regardless of light cycle. i've tried putting seedlings under floros until rooted and i've started seeds directly in the system and did not note any significant rate of growth differences.

It is important to note my light is a dual-fixture - I use a 400w MH and a 600w HPS throughout the entire grow.

From past op's (1000w MH then 1000w HPS) I think the best way to go, for efficiency and yield, is the 400w MH/600w HPS.. I have yet to test this..

Have you used the 1000w HPS alone?

If yes, did you see a increase in yield with the MH/HPS combo?

I have no 1000w HPS - just the dual-fixture burning both bulbs at the same time adding up to 1000w.

i have used 24/7 for this whole grow. from seedling thru day 37 since sprouting. i guess this would be about week 3 veg. lots of pic in journal
now keep in mind this is my first grow. and did not have some critical tools like ec/tds meter and ph meter. so growth wise it could be blamed on many things. to tell you the truth you could not even use my grow as a study, for those reason above and its bagseed, nothing to it compare to.

now bubblelicous and skunk #1 showed up today. and i have the TDS meter and ph meter. so next grow will be test with 24/7 1000w

that is correct. my current lighting system is the best i've ever used.
Mixing the two makes perfect sense to me. It covers the entire spectrum and hits them with the most efficient (cost+output) bulbs on the market.

I read your journal with the DWC.. very nice yield!

I'll be taking that page out of your book, sir!

the rainforest is an aeroponic system.

Was it?

There might be a reason to my confusion.. :blsmoke:

Either way, I think the DWC is going to be the next route in these parts. Cheap, effective, simple.
If I were building one - i think I would base it on Earl's system:
https://www.rollitup.org/hydroponics-aeroponics/38569-aeroponic-space-shuttle.html

The rainforest has a vortex sprayer that spins around misting the roots. I put some air tubes in the reservoir and the plants really do grow like wildfire under those HIDs!
