Mecklenburg County Arrests - 08.28.2011
A 27-year-old man died at Carolinas Medical Center this morning after he was shot during what police described as an aggressive "moving altercation" near North Church and West 24th streets early Sunday.
Police responding to call at about 2:15 a.m. said they found Tariq Hamid El, also known as Bobby Steele, with a gunshot wound in his vehicle on West 24th.
He was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, but died a day afterward.
Police said the shooter called 911 from the scene and reported that while he was driving his car, he shot "multiple times" at the victim's vehicle.
Police have charged Desmon Antoine Curry, 23, with murder in connection with the killing. Curry was taken to Mecklenburg jail, police said, but his bond information was not immediately available.
Police are still investigating the case. Detectives ask that anyone who saw two vehicles driving aggressively near 24th and Tryon streets at the time call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
