Day 2
What's up everybody--
This is my third grow and I've decided to do a SCROG. I'm actually going to journal it this time with regular updates so that I can keep track of my progress and open it up for comments/questions/observations. Hope you enjoy.
Start with the basics--I'm running and Ebb and Flow Hydroponics system in 5x5 grow tent. I have a 1000w HPS bulb (Hortilux Enhanced Spectrum) which I'll be running through both veg/flower. I had a MH bulb for my last two grows, however it broke so now I'm left with HPS. Should work out just fine.
This will be a SCROG grow with mostly sativa dominate strains (minus the PE)--4 Chocolopes, 3 Jack 47s and 1 Pineapple Express. Even though it is usually recommended to run clones in a SCROG setup, I decided to go against this and start with seeds. Seeded plants aren't "mature" from the get-go and they take a little longer to branch out, hence why it's recommended that you use clones. Also, if you use non-feminized seeds you run the risk of having male plants, which are a bitch to untangle and take out of the screen. I have feminized seeds so shouldn't be too much of a problem tho I don't expect!
I germinated 9 feminized seeds with the intention of running 6 in the setup, however all 9 made it so I expanded the setup to include 8. I used the wet paper towel method, then transferred them to small rockwool cubes once the taproots were a few millimeters long. I placed the rockwool cubes in a tray filled with perlite, and set them underneath a t8 florescent light (you can get an idea from the pictures underneath). I kept them watered with 0 ppm water mixed with a small concentration of VooDoo juice (for root development) and some thrive alive. Watered only when necessary.
Some people ask why I use perlite in the tray. Well, from my experience, I like to keep the plants as close to the light as possible without drying out. I used to use a humidity dome, however this meant that I couldn't be as efficient with the fluorescent and I lost a few inches between the light and plants. Perlite has a large surface area, therefore when it's wet the water evaporates more quickly and it raises the humidity. This way, the environment stays nice a moist for the seedlings and I can keep the babies a few inches from the light. Not only this, but it also gives the roots something to grow into once they hit the bottom of the rockwool cube. I assume perlite is better than the plastic bottom of the tray. Either way, thought I'd pass this info along because it definitely helped me on my last grow.
Moving along, I then transferred the smaller rockwool cubes into larger rockwool cubes once the roots had pushed their way through. I do this because I like to give the plants a little bit more time to establish a root system before I put them into main system. I find that it increases the survival rate. This process takes about two weeks.
So now the fun begins! It's August 23rd, and the plants have been in the main system for 2 days. Like I mentioned previously, I had a 9/9 100% survival rate and the seedlings look great. However, I only had room for 8 so I'm keeping the last Chocolope off to the side under the t8 in case I lose one of the others.
Lets see--what else what else. Lots of stuff to cover lol so please don't hesitate to ask questions if I leave something out (which I probably will). Guess I'll handle my SCROG net. It was simple to build, just fashioned some eyehooks into a PVC frame and ran some garden twine across. Made it nice and tight. I have 4.5x4.5 screen and placed about 18 inches above the top of my buckets.
As far as nutrients are concerned, I'll be using the simple LUCAS formula with GH nutrients and a few additives. (https://www.rollitup.org/hydroponics-aeroponics/4387-lucas-formula.html). Additives include VooDoo Juice, Floraliscious Plus and a Mg/Ca boost.
On to the plants. They're a few weeks old but obviously just went into the system. I kept the PPMs low for the first day, around 300 and today I bumped them up to 400. Haven't used the Floraliscious Plus yet, waiting til next week or until they can handle it. This stuff is like crack and in my past experience, they seem to love it and grow like crazy once it's added. I'll probably wait until the roots come through the bottom of the interior bucket.
I have my lights on from 8 am til 2 am (18/6), with 4 flood cycles a day--when the lights come on, when they go off, and twice in between. I'll bump this once they get a little bigger.
I have a 6 in inline fan pulling air through a carbon filter, then the light, and finally discharging out of the tent. Keeps temps well under control. I also have a 6 in booster fan sucking air through duct w/ a filter linked to the exterior, replenishing air within the tent. Above the future canopy, I have an oscillating fan, and underneath I have a stationary blower fan. Hopefully I'll be pretty good in the circulation department.
I treated the plants with some Neem oil when I induced them to the new system. This should keep the spider mites good and far away from everything. Didn't do this for my first grow and it turned out to be a huge a problem. Learn from your mistakes right?
I guess with all of that being said, it's time to move onto the pictures! Enjoy, subscribe if you're interested, post away with comments/questions/whatever and expect an update soon!
