Cotton works as a good filter. But I prefer using no filter, it weakens the hit/smoke.

A roach is the European term for what Americans would call a crutch. A piece of card acting as a mouth piece to add stability to the joint and to stop the mouthpiece turning to mmuch if with slobery friends etc. Also makes rolling the joint much easier in my opinion as there is something firm to hold onto. With a cruth/roach there is no burning of fingers waste of weed or requirement for a roach clip.

a roach here is just the end of a joint....never heard it called a crutch.....dont use cardboard either (cant smoke that when im out lol) and instead of a roach clip i usually stick it i my one hit backwards and light the end

Same here.
I can understand the use of the cardboard though to keep people from slobbering on the weed. Yuck!
We just use doobie smokers instead.

i call them tips. i just snapped a pic to show what i do. and before anyone asks, yes that is 100% by hand, no fruity ass rolling machine. just the right rolling gear and my skills. i wish people would stop calling them filters because people get the wrong idea and start lecturing. there is no "filtering" occurring. just a luxury cigarette that can be rolled tight and still pull, never burns anyone's fingers, and leaves no weed to waste.

It looks like the Tip takes up about 30% of the length of the paper. Are you using longer than standard rolling papers?

Don't you still have to put it out before burning the Tip?

it's interesting that you point that out about the length. when i first bought the tips i said the same thing. the j in the pic is with standard papers but i do also use the papers on the roll on occasion (made by rollies) for longer ones. however i quickly realized that i could roll the joint so much tighter that it burned really slow, so by the time i get to the tip i'm done anyway. also elements brand makes tips that are about half the length of the raw ones, but i don't like the paper they use. the only down side is the very last hit can sometimes be some hot ash, but i have it down. i use real thin papers so i can see when i'm getting to the tip. the tip itself won't really burn, though, so you won't get a hit of nasty paper or anything.
