Quick question on electrics....

Hi again guys,

I just picked a 'surge protector' up from my local hardware store. Exact specs are- 4 way switch adaptor, 13500amps, 775 volts.

My question(s) is this, can I use this to proect my timer and use it to plug my 600/1000watt HPS ballast into? And extra stupid question, if so, I would plug the timer into the wall and then this into the timer, right?

Sorry for inane ???'s First time grower that knows shit. :(

Thanks all.

13 thousand amps??? are you in N.America? Europe has different power system.
in US, most surge protectors plug into the outlet, then you plug anything you want to protect into the surge protector

you would want to plug the surge protector into the outlet, then the timer into the surge protector, and the light into the timer. take a look at your timer and see if the rating of it is large enough for your light.

if the timer is a 600 watt rated, you dont want to plug in 1000 watts in it.

i am not a big fan of running HID lights in those cheap timers you get from like home depot, regardless of the timer rating, but alot of people use them.

and make sure you keep all electrical off the floor away from water.

GFI protection is also a great idea for safety.

i think that is the rating of the surge that will be suppressed if your electric was to spike that high.

Thanks guys, Europe BTW. And the rating on the timer is 3120W. On the surge-protector its states very clearly 'Total Load must not exceed 3000W'. So can I get a general consensus on the timer into outlet or timer into power-surge thingy?

Nearly there BTW in my growroom design details, just need a few final last pushes. :-)

Thanks again.

looks like you have a consensus already.

Do I even need a contactor for the light? The timer says its rated to 3000watts, my HPS is 600watts.

Thanks for all the help.

no you dont need a contactor. the timer will work, but i dont think they are very reliable. you may get 1 that works for years but another may not even last 1 grow.

i use the intermatic timer that you would use on a pool pump or similar equipment, but they are pricey and they need to be wired, its not just plug and play.

what kind of timer is it?

oh sorry forgot you have those U.K. contraptions. but i would say the timer is no different than the cheap ones here. i use one of those to control my exhaust fan though. it should work for your light ok
