MH light for veg - how high?

I put seedlings under a 250w MH about 3 feet up. As I saw more and more green, I lowered the light slowly. Now it's about 2 feet and the plants are thriving. I'll probably veg them another 10 days.

Question: can they handle more light now? Should I lower it and to where?

As close as you can get without heat being an issue.

Usually, 18''-24'' is good.

rule of thumb: put your hand under the lamp. if it's hot, it's too close, if it's not too hot, you're good! i have my 600 HPS about 8" above the buds. i could probably move it a bit closer but it just looks too close!
